top 10 most life-changing books to read

I had some idea of the books I’d find when I searched “life-changing books.” I knew I’d see “The Alchemist” and “Atomic Habits” topping most lists. But I wasn’t prepared for the variety of books I’d discover, from fiction to inspirational to self-improvement – each suggestion was as unique as the person recommending it.

I scrolled through list after list, from Goodreads to Reddit to booklists posted by popular media companies and book bloggers. Each one featured an eclectic mix of personal development and inspirational classics. Honestly, I could have easily featured over a hundred life-changing books and still not scratched the surface of what’s touched people’s lives.

However, to keep this post from overflowing, I narrowed it down (as best I could) into an easy-to-digest top-ten list. I noticed that these ten books kept popping up in everyone’s recommendations. They’re the books readers haven’t easily forgotten – making them worthy of earning the distinction of “life-changing.”

top 10 most life-changing books to read

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Follow the journey of Santiago, a young shepherd who dreams of finding a hidden treasure at the Egyptian pyramids. As he travels, he encounters a series of intriguing characters and challenging situations that help him learn important life lessons about following your dreams and listening to the language of the universe.

Readers can’t get enough of this captivating story with its wise words, magical storytelling, and a message that’ll lift you up and inspire you to find yourself. With themes of destiny, faith, and chasing after happiness, it’s like a bookish treasure hunt that you won’t want to put down!

My Thoughts: As arguably the most often recommended inspirational book, you may wonder if it’s worth the hype. I read “The Alchemist” a few years ago while on vacation and, like everyone else, absolutely loved it – it really is magical! And it’s rather short for a novel, so you don’t have to worry about a huge time commitment if you’re curious about checking it out.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

This heartwarming and thought-provoking story follows a young girl named Scout as she navigates the complexities of life in a small Southern town. Set against the backdrop of racial tensions and injustice, Scout learns important lessons about empathy, courage, and standing up for what is right.

Readers often recommend this timeless classic for its ability to make you laugh, cry, and feel all the feels.

My Thoughts: I remember reading “To Kill a Mockingbird” in high school and enjoying it. (I never liked being told what to read, so it was always a happy occasion when I liked the required reading.) If you last read it decades ago (like me), it may be worth picking up and reading again, especially from an adult perspective and during the time we live in now.

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

This transformative guide teaches how to live fully and embrace the present moment instead of getting stuck in the past or worrying about the future. Tolle emphasizes the importance of mindfulness and awareness to help you let go of negative thoughts and emotions.

Readers appreciate this life-changing read for its simple yet profound teachings that offer a new perspective on life, stress, and inner peace. This book has the power to transform your mindset and outlook on life.

My Thoughts: A few years ago, during a stressful time, I picked up “The Power of Now” and found it helpful for letting go of all that constant mental chatter that gets in the way of just enjoying life. If you’re looking to de-stress, find more clarity, or be more present in your everyday life, you’ll want to dive into this book ASAP!

Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

This powerful memoir recounts the author’s experiences as a Holocaust survivor and a renowned psychiatrist. As Frankl reflects on his time in concentration camps and how he found purpose amidst unimaginable suffering, he shares profound insights into the human spirit and the importance of finding meaning during life’s challenges.

Readers are drawn to this book for its poignant and inspiring message of hope and the resilience of the human spirit. It offers a unique perspective on facing adversity, making it a timeless and thought-provoking read that many find deeply impactful and empowering.

My Thoughts: When I searched for “books that will change your life,” this book was suggested on nearly every booklist. It definitely sounds like a heavy read, and certainly, after reading something like this, you won’t soon forget the story or the lessons!

Atomic Habits by James Clear

This game-changing self-help book explores the power of small habits in achieving big goals. Clear breaks down how tiny changes in our daily routines can lead to remarkable transformations over time, offering practical strategies and actionable tips for building good habits and breaking bad ones.

Readers love this book because it’s practical, motivational, and full of actionable tips to help them unleash their full potential. Plus, Clear’s engaging writing style and relatable examples make it an enjoyable and easy read for anyone seeking personal development and growth.

My Thoughts: With more than 15 million copies sold, it looks like I’m in the minority for not reading it yet. However, I’ve read plenty of articles sharing many of James Clear’s quotes and insightful lessons. Maybe it’s time for me to start a new habit and read this book!

You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero

You know that friend who pumps you up and makes you believe in yourself? That’s this book! Learn how to kick self-doubt to the curb and embrace your inner awesomeness.

Readers often recommend this book because it’s like a shot of inspiration straight to the heart. Jen’s witty and relatable writing style makes personal growth feel more like a fun adventure. The practical tips and exercises in the book also help readers take actionable steps toward creating the life of their dreams.

My Thoughts: Since I read more fiction, I haven’t picked up this book, but I love the title and the concept. Ok, I’ve just decided something – I’m starting a separate want-to-read list for myself that includes this book, “Atomic Habits,” and the next book on this list, “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.” (And then I’ll be invincible – LOL!)

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson

This wild ride of a self-help book gets real about living a more fulfilling life. Author Mark Manson throws out all the fluffy BS as he imparts tough love advice while still managing to make you laugh. You’ll discover how to find value in prioritizing what truly matters in life instead of sweating the small stuff.

Readers love this book because it’s refreshingly honest, cuts through the noise, and gives practical advice for finding true happiness and success without all the usual clichés.

My Thoughts: As I mentioned earlier, I’m adding this book to my new “Better Me” reading list. I may download it as an audiobook so I can listen to it on the go or while doing chores. (But be aware, if you plan on listening to it, too, invest in headphones because the title is only the start of the rampant colorful language.)

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

This powerful and inspiring autobiography narrates Maya Angelou’s coming-of-age journey of resilience and self-discovery, from her traumatic childhood experiences to her eventual triumph over adversity. Angelou’s storytelling is raw, honest, and poignant as it touches on themes of racism, identity, and personal growth.

Readers often recommend this book for its vivid and poetic language that often evokes strong emotions and for the way Angelou’s narrative voice effortlessly draws them in, making them feel like they are right there with her through every triumph and tribulation.

My Thoughts: I read this book when I was a teen, and, as with all the life-changing books on this list, it’s unforgettable. I can easily see why readers state that it’s a book they keep coming back to and rereading.

Daring Greatly by Brené Brown

After Brené Brown’s TED Talk on vulnerability went viral, she became a leader in practical self-help and relationship advice. In this book, Brown shares her easy-to-digest wisdom, personal stories, and research findings as she encourages you to live wholeheartedly by finding the courage to show up and be seen even when it feels scary or uncertain.

Many readers recommend this book for its relatable and insightful approach to living more authentically. It’s like having a wise friend cheering you on!

My Thoughts: I listened to the audiobook version a few years ago and loved it! Brené Brown is so likable. She’s a great mix of being down-to-earth and relatable while also basing her advice on solid scientific research.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

While imprisoned in a forbidding fortress for a crime he didn’t commit, Edmond Dantès hears whispers of a magnificent treasure hidden on Monte Cristo Island. With this compelling knowledge, he’s not only set on breaking free from his confinement but also on seeking vengeance against the three men who framed him. Dumas based this thrilling saga of suffering and payback on an actual case of injustice.

Readers often recommend this classic novel, originally published in the 1840s, for its intricate plot, compelling characters, and timeless themes of forgiveness and moral ambiguity. It’s a riveting and thought-provoking read for anyone craving adventure, intrigue, and redemption.

My Thoughts: I’ve heard of this book but never gave it much thought until I was researching this booklist and saw it mentioned several times. However, based on the reviews and the premise, I’m glad I found it. And I’m looking forward to reading it sometime soon!

How to Add Life-Changing Books to Your Reading Routine

If you’d like more books that stick with you on your TBR list, here are a few helpful tips to help you find and enjoy a read you won’t soon forget.

  1. Ask your friends, family, or people you trust for suggestions.
  2. Look for books based on what interests you, what goals you have, and the challenges you’re facing.
  3. Even if it’s a genre you don’t usually read, try it if the subject matter clicks with you.
  4. Once you’ve found a book that speaks to you, dive in with an open mind. Take notes, highlight important parts, and think about how you can apply the lessons from the book to your own life.
  5. Finally, don’t keep all that newfound wisdom to yourself! Share your thoughts, questions, and reflections with others who have read the same book or who might benefit from it. Engaging in discussions can help you deepen your understanding and gain fresh perspectives.
