The Whisper of the Past

Whisper

By idaly cookPublished 11 months ago 2 min read

When Sofia inherited her grandmother's old house in a small town, she did not expect the property to hold more than dusty memories. From the moment she arrived, every night she heard a faint whisper traveling through the hallways, as if the walls wanted to tell her a secret.

At first, she thought it was the wind sneaking through the cracks in the aged wood. However, one early morning, she woke up with the sensation of being watched. With her heart pounding, she grabbed her flashlight and stepped out of her room. Upon reaching the main hall, she saw a leather-bound notebook open on the table, one she swore she had not left there.

Intrigued, she took it in her hands and began to read. They were diaries belonging to her great-grandmother, written in elegant, precise handwriting. They told stories of life in the house but also revealed a hidden tragedy: a missing sister no one spoke about. According to the pages, the girl vanished one night without a trace, and the family, fearful of what might have happened, decided to bury the memory.

Sofia couldn't ignore this. She researched the town's records and discovered that, indeed, at the beginning of the 20th century, her family had reported the disappearance of a nine-year-old girl. However, the case had been closed without explanations. Her skin crawled when she found a testimony suggesting that the girl used to play in the basement of the house before she vanished.

With a mix of fear and determination, Sofia went down to the basement that night. It didn't take long to find a loose wooden board on the floor. With effort, she lifted it and uncovered a hidden compartment. Inside, she found an old red ribbon and a pendant with the initials "E.R." engraved on it. At that moment, a chill ran down her spine as she heard a close whisper: "Thank you."

From that night on, the house stopped whispering. Sofia felt that, somehow, she had freed a spirit trapped by oblivion. And although she never knew exactly what had happened to her great-great-aunt, she understood that some stories only seek to be told to find peace.
