The Weight of a Stolen Destiny

Lena always knew something was wrong.

Her life was too small, too empty, as if someone had hollowed it out before she even got the chance to live it. She worked at a bookstore where no one remembered her name. She rented a one-bedroom apartment filled with things she didn’t care about. Every morning, she woke up with the faintest ache in her chest, like she had lost something vital but couldn’t remember what.

Then, one evening, a man she had never seen before stood outside her shop. He stared at her—not in the way strangers did, but as if he knew her. His eyes were filled with the weight of recognition she couldn’t return.

"Lena?" His voice cracked.

She hesitated. "Do I know you?"

His face fell. "You should," he said. "Because you used to be someone else."

Something in her mind trembled, like a locked door rattling on its hinges. She didn’t move, but a strange, foreign fear wrapped around her.

"What are you talking about?"

"You don’t remember, do you?" He took a slow step forward. "Your life was taken. The real you—your memories, your purpose, your past—it was stolen."

Lena's heartbeat pounded in her ears. It was ridiculous, impossible. And yet... she felt the truth in his words like a wound reopening.

She backed away. "I don’t understand."

"You were never meant to be here—in this town, in this life. You were meant for something else. Something greater." His voice was urgent now, his hands clenched into fists. "But someone took it from you. And I’ve spent years trying to bring you back."

The bookstore around her suddenly felt unreal. The life she had lived, the days she had repeated over and over, the loneliness she had never been able to explain—it all twisted in her mind, unraveling like a thread being pulled loose.

"Who did this?" she whispered.

His gaze darkened. "Someone who feared what you were meant to become."

Lena’s breath caught. A flicker of a memory—shadows, voices, the feeling of falling—flashed across her mind like a ghost.
