The Time Weavers

Shadows of the Imperium

By Ferdinand FavePublished 2 years ago 14 min read

The world had unified under a single, omnipotent government known as the Imperium. With technology that defied the wildest imaginations, time travel had become a reality. The elite group called the Imperials, which included David, had the exclusive authority to traverse the past. Their mission was to subtly influence history for the Imperium’s benefit. They could create or destroy individuals and entire nations through thoughts and dreams using a device called the phallo. The Imperials followed orders without question, bound by one cardinal rule: they must never be seen by anyone from the past.

David was a fresh recruit, eager to prove his loyalty and skill. His mentor, John, was a seasoned veteran with a stoic demeanour. John's piercing blue eyes seemed to see through every lie and deceit, and his voice, deep and gravelly, commanded respect. Despite his intimidating presence, John had a soft spot for David, seeing potential in the young recruit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One mission, David miscalculated his location and just popped up in a back alley behind a building. It was 2 a.m., and the alley was dimly lit by a single flickering streetlight. The air was thick with the smell of garbage and the distant sound of city life. David sighed in relief, thinking he was alone. But when he turned around, he uttered a funny, childish scream that echoed through the alley. Standing there was a woman, her eyes wide with surprise.

"Who are you?" she asked, her voice steady and curious. She was tall and athletic, with sharp features and piercing green eyes. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail, and she wore a leather jacket over a simple t-shirt and jeans.

David's heart raced. He had been seen. His mind spun with thoughts of the consequences. The punishment for being seen was death by teleportation into a void in space—a cold, dark, airless place leading to instant death. Panic surged through him. Without thinking, he activated his time travel device and vanished right before her eyes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

David reappeared in his room, trembling. The room was stark and utilitarian, with metallic walls and minimal furnishings. A single window provided a view of the sprawling cityscape, bathed in the artificial glow of neon lights. David slumped into a corner, his heart pounding in his chest.

Memories of his childhood surfaced. He remembered a night when he was running with his parents, their faces tense with fear. His mother's hand slipped from his as they fled from a group of shadowy figures. They had left him at his aunt's place, and he had grown up without ever hearing from them again. Snapping back to the present, David muttered, “Uh-oh, my mind is now showing my past — I think this is a sign that I am going to die!” He cried like a child, rolling on the floor, before lying on his back, staring at the ceiling.

His mind wandered to the day he took his oath as an Imperial. He remembered the Prime’s cold, emotionless voice echoing as he pledged his allegiance to the Imperium. The Prime hovered above them, face hidden by a white robe, while the Knights stared down, silent and menacing. The Prime's voice, old and haunting, sent chills down David's spine. He remembered the one unbreakable rule: never be seen by anyone from the past.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Desperate to fix his mistake, David decided to go back to the moment before he was seen. His nerves frazzled, he muttered to himself, his hands shaking. He accidentally set the device to 2 seconds after Janice had seen his earlier self. He reappeared in the same alley, now facing both Janice and his past self.

The two Davids stared at each other, panic mirrored in their eyes. “What did you do?” the old David asked the new David, realizing the gravity of their situation.

Janice, unfazed, said, “Guys, who are you? What are you?”

The Davids, in unison, replied, “Are you okay? You don’t look scared. We are human. I mean, we are humans.” They pointed at each other, causing Janice to roll her eyes.

“Snap out of it,” she said. “You can’t change what happened. I’ve seen you.”

The Davids realized she was right. They couldn’t undo the damage. They were all in danger now. The Imperium would come after them. Janice demanded to know who they were and what they were doing. They had no choice but to tell her everything.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Janice listened, her anger growing. She scolded the Davids, lecturing them about humanity being treated like toys. Her words hit home, and the Davids felt a deep guilt for their actions. They vowed to stop the Imperium. They were now a team of three, determined to save the world.

As they discussed their next steps, the Davids sensed the presence of the Imperium closing in. They heard footsteps approaching. “They know,” the Davids whispered urgently. “Get in my car,” Janice ordered. “I know a safe place.”

In Janice’s safe house, the Davids looked at her like she was crazy. She smirked. “So, your Imperium thinks they can destroy me?” She had a devilish plan. The Davids, now more scared of her than the Imperium, asked in unison, “What are you planning?”

Janice, smiling, said, “I know people who can help us. They’re not scared of the future or anything—just like me. But you need to tell them the whole story.” The Davids agreed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After weeks of hiding, Janice and her friends, along with the Davids, devised a plan. Someone from the past needed to go to the future. Janice volunteered eagerly. Wearing David’s uniform to avoid the side effects of time travel, she used his device to teleport to the year 3000.

The other David and Janice’s friends distracted the Imperium and its watchful eyes, running and hiding for days to buy time. When the Imperium was sufficiently fooled, David and Janice made their move.

They reappeared in David’s room. Exhausted, David collapsed onto his bed. “I’m so tired I need to sleep,” he mumbled. Janice, smirking, said, “You’ll be sleeping forever once you’re executed.” David, anxious, agreed.

Janice, excited, asked, “What’s your plan?” David, realizing he had none, was in shock. “I don’t have a plan,” he admitted. Janice smiled. “This isn’t even my timeline, and yet I have a plan.” David, amazed, followed her lead.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They quietly left the building, noticing the eerie emptiness. “Not even a single soul,” David whispered. “Your timeline is boring,” Janice remarked. “Everything is in order. It’s weird. There’s no fun at all.”

They got lost in a dark alley, hearing footsteps behind them. They were cornered. The figures approaching them were silent, armed. David and Janice were sacked and dragged away.

David and Janice were forced to sit in an interrogation room. After hours of waiting, a figure stood in the doorway, shrouded in darkness. “Hello David,” the figure said. “How are you? I miss you so much, my son!”

David’s heart pounded. “Mom?” he whispered. The woman stepped into the light, revealing her face. It was his mother, looking unchanged from his childhood memories.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

David's world spun. He had imagined this moment countless times, but never like this. His mother, standing before him, in the heart of the Imperium’s grasp. The room seemed to close in around him, the air thick with tension. Janice, usually so composed, looked genuinely stunned.

“How... how are you here?” David stammered, his voice cracking.

His mother, Maria, stepped closer. Her eyes, the same piercing blue as his, were filled with a mix of sorrow and determination. “It’s a long story, David. One that involves a lot of secrets and sacrifices.”

David’s heart raced. He remembered the nights he had cried himself to sleep, longing for his parents. Now, standing before him was the answer to all those sleepless nights. “I thought you were dead,” he whispered, tears welling up in his eyes.

Maria’s face softened, and she reached out, cupping his face in her hands. “I had to disappear to protect you. The Imperium... they would have used you against us.”

Janice, regaining her composure, interrupted. “This is touching and all, but we’re kind of in the middle of a crisis here. The Imperium is hunting us down.”

Maria nodded, her expression turning serious. “I know. That’s why I’m here. To help you.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As Maria explained, David listened intently, his emotions swinging wildly between anger, relief, and confusion. She told them about her past, how she had been one of the top scientists for the Imperium. She had discovered the dark truth behind their missions and had gone into hiding to protect her family.

“The phallo device,” Maria said, her voice steady, “is more dangerous than you can imagine. It doesn’t just influence thoughts; it can completely control minds. The Imperium has been using it to shape history to their advantage.”

David clenched his fists, anger bubbling up inside him. “And we were just pawns in their game,” he muttered.

Maria placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “We can stop them, David. But we need to act fast.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The plan Maria proposed was risky but their only hope. They needed to destroy the main phallo device, located deep within the Imperium’s headquarters. Maria had insider knowledge of its location and security measures.

Janice, always the practical one, asked, “How do we get in without being detected?”

Maria smiled, a glint of mischief in her eyes. “Leave that to me. I have a few tricks up my sleeve.”

David, still reeling from the emotional reunion, took a deep breath. “Alright. Let’s do this.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The journey to the Imperium’s headquarters was tense. They moved through the shadows, avoiding patrols and surveillance drones. The city, usually bustling, felt eerily quiet, as if holding its breath in anticipation. David’s heart pounded in his chest, his mind racing with thoughts of what lay ahead.

They reached the headquarters, a towering structure of steel and glass. The phallo device was housed in the sub-basement, heavily guarded and secured. Maria led them through a series of hidden tunnels and passages, her familiarity with the building evident.

At one point, they had to pause, pressing themselves against a wall as a patrol passed by. David could feel Janice’s breath on his neck, her tension palpable. Maria remained calm, her eyes scanning their surroundings.

Finally, they reached the sub-basement. The room housing the phallo device was massive, filled with humming machinery and glowing screens. In the center stood the device itself, a sleek, menacing apparatus that pulsed with energy.

Maria handed David a small, cylindrical device. “This is an EMP. It will disable the phallo, but only for a short time. We need to destroy it completely.”

David nodded, taking the device with a determined look. “Let’s end this.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As they approached the phallo, an alarm blared. Red lights flashed, and a robotic voice announced, “Intruders detected.”

“Shit,” Janice muttered, her eyes darting around. “We need to move fast.”

David activated the EMP, throwing it at the phallo. The device sparked and fizzled, the hum of machinery dying down. Maria ran to the control panel, typing furiously.

“We have to overload it,” she shouted over the noise. “That’s the only way to destroy it permanently.”

David and Janice worked to barricade the doors, buying them some time. The pounding on the doors grew louder, the Imperium’s forces closing in.

“Come on, come on,” Maria muttered, her fingers flying over the keys. “Just a little more…”

With a final keystroke, the phallo began to glow brighter, its hum reaching a deafening pitch. “Now!” Maria shouted. “Get out, now!”

They ran, the building shaking as the phallo overloaded. They made it out just in time, the explosion rocking the ground beneath them. The phallo was destroyed, but their victory was short-lived.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Outside, they were surrounded. Imperium soldiers, clad in dark armor, their faces hidden behind visors, closed in. David, Maria, and Janice stood back to back, ready to fight.

A voice echoed through the air, cold and commanding. “Stand down.”

The Prime, flanked by the silent Knights, hovered above them. His presence was overwhelming, his aura of power undeniable. “You have caused enough trouble,” he said, his voice echoing in David’s mind.

David felt a surge of anger. “We won’t let you control us anymore,” he shouted.

The Prime tilted his head, as if amused. “You think you’ve won? This is just the beginning.”

Before they could react, a wave of energy knocked them off their feet. David struggled to get up, his vision blurring. He saw the Prime approaching, his cold eyes locked on him.

“You will learn your place,” the Prime said, raising his hand. “You will see the futility of your actions.”

David braced himself, ready to fight, but a sudden flash of light blinded him. He felt a searing pain, then darkness.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When David awoke, he was in a small, dimly lit room. His head throbbed, and his body felt heavy. He tried to move, but his limbs were restrained. Panic set in as he realized he was captured.

The door creaked open, and Maria entered, her face a mask of determination. “David, are you alright?”

David nodded, struggling against his restraints. “What happened? Where are we?”

Maria sighed, sitting beside him. “We were captured, but I managed to convince them to let me see you. They want to use us, David. They think they can break us.”

David’s eyes burned with anger. “They can try, but we won’t let them win.”

Maria leaned in, her voice a whisper. “I have a plan, but it’s risky. We need to work together.”

David nodded, his resolve strengthening. “I’m with you, Mom.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next few days were a blur of planning and waiting. Maria used her knowledge of the Imperium to devise an escape plan. They communicated in hushed whispers, careful not to arouse suspicion.

One night, under the cover of darkness, they made their move. Maria had managed to disable the surveillance systems temporarily, giving them a window of opportunity. They moved swiftly and silently, avoiding patrols and cameras.

They reached a hidden passage Maria had discovered during her time working for the Imperium. It led to an underground network of tunnels that could take them out of the city.

As they navigated the labyrinthine tunnels, David felt a sense of hope for the first time in years. They were close to freedom, close to stopping the Imperium’s tyranny.

But as they emerged from the tunnels, they were met with a familiar figure. The Prime, surrounded by his Knights, stood in their path.

“You didn’t think it would be that easy, did you?” the Prime said, his voice dripping with disdain.

David stepped forward, his fists clenched. “We will stop you. We will free everyone from your control.”

The Prime laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. “You are but a fly in the web of history. I am the weaver.”

David glanced at Maria, who gave a subtle nod. They were ready. Together, they would fight for their freedom, for the future.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The battle was fierce. David and Maria fought with a desperation born of hope and determination. The Knights, silent and relentless, closed in on them, but they held their ground.

David felt a surge of energy, his anger and resolve fueling his every move. He dodged and struck with precision, each blow a testament to his will to survive.

Maria, with her knowledge and skills, fought alongside him, their movements in perfect sync. They were a formidable team, driven by a shared goal.

But the Prime was powerful, his control over the phallo device giving him an edge. He manipulated the energy around him, using it to attack and defend with ease.

David knew they couldn’t hold out forever. They needed a plan, a way to turn the tide in their favor.

“Mom, we need to overload his control,” David shouted over the din of battle.

Maria nodded, her eyes fierce with determination. “I’ll create a distraction. You go for the device.”

With a final burst of energy, Maria launched herself at the Prime, drawing his attention. David seized the opportunity, making his way towards the control panel.

He reached it, his hands moving quickly over the controls. He could feel the energy building, the device humming with power.

“Now, David!” Maria’s voice rang out, filled with urgency.

David pressed the final sequence, and the device sparked and sputtered. The Prime, realizing what was happening, turned towards him, fury in his eyes.

“You dare defy me?” he roared, but it was too late.

The device overloaded, a surge of energy exploding outwards. The Prime and his Knights were thrown back, their control shattered.

David and Maria stood amidst the wreckage, their breaths coming in ragged gasps. They had done it. They had broken the Imperium’s hold.

But the fight was not over. They still had to escape, to spread the word and rally others to their cause.

As they made their way out of the ruins, David felt a sense of purpose like never before. They had taken the first step towards freedom, towards a future where they controlled their own destinies.

And they would not stop until the Imperium was no more.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

David and Maria moved through the shadows, their footsteps echoing in the silence. The city around them was awakening, the first rays of dawn breaking over the horizon.

They reached a safe house, one of many Maria had set up during her years in hiding. It was a small, unassuming building, but it offered them a moment of respite.

Inside, they found Janice waiting, her face lighting up with relief as she saw them. “You made it,” she said, rushing to embrace them.

David hugged her back, feeling the weight of the past few days lifting slightly. “We did. But this is just the beginning.”

Janice nodded, her expression determined. “We have to keep fighting. We have to spread the word, rally others to our cause.”

Maria smiled, her eyes filled with pride and hope. “And we will. Together, we can bring down the Imperium.”

As they sat together, planning their next move, David felt a sense of camaraderie and purpose. They were not alone in this fight. They had each other, and they had hope.

And that was more powerful than any device the Imperium could wield.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The battle against the Imperium was long and arduous, but David, Maria, Janice, and their growing network of allies persevered. They spread the word, rallying people to their cause, fighting for a future free from the Imperium’s control.

Through their efforts, the Imperium’s influence waned, and the people began to rise up. The phallo devices were destroyed, and the Imperials were brought to justice.

David and Maria, once separated by the Imperium’s machinations, stood together as symbols of hope and resistance. Their bond, forged in the fires of struggle, remained unbreakable.

And as the world slowly rebuilt, free from the shadows of the Imperium, they knew that they had made a difference. They had fought for their freedom, for their future, and they had won.

In the end, it was not the technology or the power that defined them, but their humanity, their courage, and their unwavering belief in a better tomorrow.

And they knew that as long as they stood together, they could face any challenge, overcome any obstacle, and build a world where everyone was free to write their own destiny.

The end.
