The Secret Miracle – Borges
One would expect that the plot of a story in which the main character is a Jewish prisoner in the hands of the Nazis would revolve around World War II, political struggles, religious tensions, etc. Borges presents us with this setting but makes his character embark on a journey of self-discovery rather than history itself.
Jaromir Hladík comes to understand himself in the condition of a prisoner and concludes that his identity is not tied to captivity or his religion but rather to his unfinished book. He then asks God, the Lord of time, to grant him one more year to complete his work.
God grants him this extra year, but in a secret way—without witnesses, without altering the course of history. For in the end, an individual's fulfillment always holds its own value.
