The Perfect Son by Freida McFadden is a psychological thriller whose main protagonist is Grace, a mother obsessed with her son, Alex, an intelligent and hardworking character, who is the “perfect son”. However, a dark mystery starts to come to light as some incidents raise questions over Alex’s innocence that will disturb the picture Grace has of her son. Elena McFadden shows the potential of family members turning on each other, the theme of lies and the assistance of a mother who will only do whatever it takes to defend her child’s life.
The upward curve also introduces many twists to the characters and situations, but it also leaves the reader unsure as to what is real and what is not due to McFadden’s choice of suspenseful pacing. The psychological part of the story is very subtle and vivid because Grace’s point of view allows the readers to witness her struggles. Pacing occurs within each chapter because the protagonist struggles with doubt, desperation and the power of love. Gradually, the secrets are revealed, and the tension never really lets up; instead, McFadden layers on factors that culminate in an exciting and emotional conclusion.
For those looking for a good mystery, suspense, psychology, strong characters, and family thriller – this book is a great choice for a deep and involving reading. Readers never know what to expect when they turn a page, and this aspect of the novel is very engaging Indeed, the themes of family betrayal and moral ambiguity are favorite elements of this book which makes this novel a gratifying read.
