The Little Prince

A Tale of Love

By Gulman sherPublished 10 months ago 2 min read

The story begins with the narrator, an airplane pilot, who, as a child, drew a picture of a boa constrictor that had swallowed an elephant. When he showed it to adults, they all insisted it was merely a drawing of a hat. Disheartened, he abandoned his passion for drawing and became a pilot.

While flying over the Sahara Desert, his plane crashes, leaving him stranded with limited food and water. As he attempts to repair his aircraft, he encounters a young boy, the Little Prince, who asks him to draw a sheep. The narrator's initial drawings fail to satisfy the Little Prince, but when he draws a box with a sheep "inside," the Little Prince is delighted.

Over the following days, the Little Prince shares stories of his home—a tiny asteroid no larger than a house—where he tends to three volcanoes and a unique rose. He recounts his visits to other asteroids, each inhabited by a solitary adult: a king without subjects, a conceited man craving admiration, a drunkard, a businessman fixated on counting stars he believes he owns, a lamplighter who dutifully lights and extinguishes a lamp every minute, and a geographer who has never seen the things he records.

Arriving on Earth, the Little Prince meets a fox who teaches him about friendship and the concept of taming, explaining that one only truly understands with the heart, not the eyes. He also encounters a railway switch man and a merchant selling pills that reduce the need for water, highlighting the absurdities of adult behavior.

After eight days without sufficient water, the narrator and the Little Prince find a well, quenching their thirst. The Little Prince expresses a desire to return home and worries about his rose, whom he feels he has neglected. He encounters a snake whose bite, the snake claims, can send him back to his planet. The Little Prince allows himself to be bitten, leaving his earthly body behind.

The next morning, the narrator cannot find the Little Prince's body. He repairs his plane and departs the desert, but he continues to remember the Little Prince whenever he hears laughter, believing that the stars are laughing. He hopes that anyone who encounters a boy with golden hair and a love for sunsets will contact him.
