When we delve into the realm of English literature to find out the classic novels written by the best novelist then we can not ignore the American English literature and the American writers who made their place and emerged out as the best. Out of many American writers who became famous in the 1920s and 1930s the name of F. Scott Fitzgerald appears at the top. Who was born on September 24, 1896, in Minnesota. He is a world-famous short story writer and novelist who depicted the Jazz Age in his most brilliant novel Great Gatsby. I shall not talk about his personal life here because his life is as dramatic as his novels. In this article, I will give summaries of his most popular work and if you find any of these books interesting, though, if you are an avid reader who loves reading the best books then every one of them is worth reading and of your time. 1) The Great Gatsby – This masterpiece is world-famous and depicts the theme of the American dream at its best. If you know about books and literature then you must have heard about this book. This novel was published in 1925. This novel is set in New York and tells about Jay Gatsby who is a self-made millionaire and his pursuit of Daisy, a wealthy young woman. this novel has flashbacks and is not narrated in chronological order. It is a kind of love story but various twists and turns.

2) The Side of Paradise – This is the first novel by F Scott Fitzgerald which was published in 1920. This novel made Scott very famous because this novel is considered a revelation of the new morality of the young lady in the Jazz Age. The hero of the novel is Amory Blaine who is a handsome, spoilt brat who takes admission to Princeton College. This novel discusses the problems of a lost generation and the theme of love which is distorted by social climbing and greed, friendship and masculinity, youth, innocence, and coming of age.

3) The Beautiful and Damned- This is the second novel written by him which was published in 1922. This novel revolves around a handsome young married couple who waits for a pending inheritance rather than involving themselves in something productive and having a meaningful life. The hero of this novel is Anthony Patch who pursues a very beautiful young lady Gloria Gilbert. He decides that he will wait for the inheritance of his grandfather until he survives on a meager income but over the years he falls into alcoholism. Later, some events take place and he loses his inheritance and the novel ends with a very peculiar turn.

4) Tender is the Night- This novel might be considered a semiautobiographical novel which was published in 1934. This novel deals with the story of a psychiatrist who gets married to one of his patients. The main character of this novel is Dick Diver and Nicole where Dick disintegrates into alcoholism and anonymity as his wife starts to gain her strength and independence. The portrayal of Dick can be understood as his own portrayal which he spent in France and Nicole’s madness comes from the mental breakdowns of his wife Zelda. It is an emotional novel that he wrote.

These are the few masterpieces that he wrote and contributed to the richness of American English literature. There are some more novels that reflect his artistic genius as a novelist.
