Of Mice And Men: 200 Word Reviews #7

A true classic in every sense.

Of Mice and Men By John Steinbeck is a simple story written by a master, who layers so much life and hope and everyday tragedy into those few pages that I feel I am a different person on the other side. Truly.

George is a shrewd and savvy operator who guards his heart. Lennie is a simple and child-like giant of a man, who clings to George as his lifeline in a world he does not have the mental faculties to understand. Together, they start work on a new ranch, hoping to save enough to get their own patch of dirt. But what transpires unravels the plan, and shows it was woven with nothing but a naive hope, insufficient to face life’s hard realities.

Steinbeck weaves this story effortlessly. It jumps right off the page and into your soul. Through his few words, I can see every character, the ranch and every moment in vivid detail. I can smell the dust, and feel the last rays of the run on my skin as it sets on the brush by the pool, and all goes silent.

I can only hope to one day write something half so incredible as this book.
