Plot Summary:
The plot of the movie focuses on Tricia and Ethan who are a married couple but who are entangled in the struggles of themselves and their marital issues. The two are then involved in a creepy scene when they arrive at the secluded snowy mansion where they face a cold game of murderer and his prey. The older a house, the more secrets are hidden, but while solving mysteries of the house, there are families’ secrets and dark truths that are shown to the audience that makes people doubt themselves and each other.
Strengths:
- Atmosphere and Setting:
As a suspense and psychological drama writer, McFadden does a splendid job in achieving the tension and pressurized environment. The desolate house, the continuing snowfall which effectively makes the house cut off from the outer world becomes an extra advantage in increasing tension. Because of the method of presenting events, the reader can personally experience cold from the climate and suspense from the events taking place.
- Character Development:
Considering the fact that this is Hayder’s debut novel, the characters are well-developed and multi-dimensional. It is interesting how Tricia and Ethan’s background stories are built progressively, which enriches the reasons behind their behaviors. The psychological issues and the transformation of the characters’ relations are depicted with the necessary amount of credibility.
- Pacing and Suspense:
The narrative moves at a perfect pace and every section of the book leaves the readers to guess what could happen next. The great suspense is consistently retained in the novel by McFadden, which makes it rather hard to keep the book away from oneself.

Twists and Turns:
The dramatic construction of the plot is easily noticeable since it contains lots of twists and turns. Analyzing the plot of the book, one can say that McFadden constantly employs the element of surprise, and just when the reader believes they understand the mystery of the plot, they are suddenly proven wrong. It is advisable to present the revelations when they evoke the greatest response from the reader and contribute to the general effect created by the story.
Weaknesses:
- Predictability:
Despite this, the book is full of twists and one can only note that some experienced readers of thrillers might guess some twists. There are just a couple of typical red herrings, which are not as misleading as planned, which in one way or another, decreases the WOW effect for some.
- Secondary Characters:
The central characters are somewhat portrayed in detail though it would be better if the secondary characters could receive similar treatments. Their roles are reflected in the plot but at the same time are quite underdeveloped and the audience desires more of their backstories.
Conclusion:
’Never Lie’ is an intense and a well-crafted crime novel that leaves no doubt about the author’s ability to entertain readers. Thus, enhanced by its strong plot, believable characters, and nerve –tearing tension the book will be surely of interest to any fan of the genre. All things considered, it provides a rewarding and suspenseful reading in the end though such clichés may temporarily stick to a reader’s mind when the last page is turned. Thus, ‘Never Lie,’ irrespective of the reader’s existing experience in reading thrillers, offers excitement and enjoyment.
