For the Summer, I wanted to challenge myself to start reading again.
I haven't been reading as much as I would like, and it's been a while since I actually made time to read.
So, I made a summer reading list that included three books in the spooky paranormal genre (That was an accident, but I'm not mad about it!) and two ebooks.
1) Shutter by Courtney Alameda
This book has been on my TBR for a while now. It follows Micheline Helsing, the last descendant of the Van Helsing lineage, who defeats monsters using a bullet or a camera lens!
While on a routine ghost hunt, Micheline's team members become infected with a ghostly illness that spreads throughout their bodies. It is up to Micheline to cure her teammates before seven days are up!
I'm really excited to read this one because the story sounds like it will be fun, like a "run against the clock" type of story! I'm interested in seeing how Micheline cures the illness and helps her teammates.
2) Another by Yukito Ayatsuji
This one is actually a re-read for me! I wanted to re-read this horror book so that I could read the next two books that follow it.
This story follows Koichi Sakaibara as he transfers to a new middle school. However, instead of a warm welcome, he receives weary glances and forced smiles because the class he gets moved into has a curse over them.
If his classmates don't start their year in a particular way, the curse activates, and terror befalls the class. Sakaibara is thrown into a mystery he must solve before the end of the year before the curse worsens.
This story is one that I fell in love with, and I can't wait to re-read it again!
3) Ring by Koji Suzuki
This is the book on which the well-known Ringu (or Ring for Western Audiences) Movie is based!
If you don't know the story, Ring follows Asakawa, a journalist based in Japan, who becomes intrigued by his niece's sudden death. While investigating, he comes in contact with a videotape that warns viewers that death will befall them if they do not perform a particular act within seven days.
To get to the bottom of this tape and his investigation, Asakawa pushes himself to multiple places, including a mountain resort, a volcanic island, and a countryside clinic - all haunted by a past that cannot be forgotten.
I have wanted to read this book for a while now because I want to see the similarities and differences between the book and the movie.
4) Discovering Christian Witchcraft by Emyle D. Prata and Sara Raztresen
This non-fiction book covers Christian Witchcraft and the many topics that fall under it, such as "What is witchcraft and how its meaning changes with time?" "How to build connections with God," and "How to bring your personal history into the practice."
It is a book that involves historical context for many Bible verses, looks deeper into what it means to be a Christian Witch, and lays a foundation for one's own personal practice!
5) The Glass Witch by Sara Raztresen
This is a fantasy book that follows Aveline, a half-summer, half-winter witch who has no real home in her country. She is mocked in the summer country for her wintry looks and magic, while in the land of Winter, she is looked upon as a mutt.
While struggling to survive, she is told that her mother, whom she loves, is dead because of the Winter King.
Aveline, seeking to avenge her mother, enters the Winter King's bridal competition to kill the King but finds that her plan A fails due to a Winter assassin, and she resorts to having to complete the competition. Unsure if she can keep her identity hidden while in the Winter Country.
So yeah, that's all the books I hope to complete this Summer. For fun, I gave myself a deadline of August 1 so that I could get to these books in a timely matter.
