My favorite Pinoy middle grade books

Books in English and Filipino for young readers

By Berliza PalmesPublished 2 years ago 1 min read
Gimo Jr. and the Aswang Clan by Andrew Pasaporte

I want to provide some information about respected first Filipino middle-grade books that are on my top list.

"Gimo Jr. and the Aswang Clan" contain themes and supernatural elements that readers of Goosebumps, Harry Potter, and the Janus Silang series may be familiar with, but this middle-grade book is unique. Pasaporte does a fantastic job of remaining authentically Filipino while departing from the typical "strange and eerie barrio vibes."

“If Janus Silang and the Tabon Man” by Edgar Calabia Samar

Janus Silang is a series that combines Filipino mythology and modern technology, thus this book fits perfectly to the middle-grade audience.

Segundo D. Matias Jr’s “Alamat ng Duhat”

Secondo D. Matias Jr tells stories which enable him to revive traditional Filipino myths and legends from the point of view that is as attractive to informative one.

"Lola’s Old Maid" by Genaro Gojo Cruz

Mr Genaro Gojo Cruz is a reputed figure from the Filipino demographic who wrote this unique story about an old magical cabinet that blends elements of fantasy and Philippine culture.

Rene O. Villanueva’s “Ang Itim na Kuting”.

This classic children’s story in the Philippines follows a black kitten for its adventures; it does this by giving helpful lessons to life but make sure that they are easily readable yet informative.

Ergoe Tinio’s “Ang Pambansang Almusal”

Thus, Ergoe Tinio’s stories combine humorous and true-to-life lessons. The story behind “Ang Pambansang Almusal” centers on the mysticism of Filipino breakfast food, making it a very appealing and meaningful reading material.

There are many other talented Filipino authors producing essential contributions to the world of mid-grade writing. In the search of books that one will read, try different genres and themes to find stories which appeal or are meant for a particular audience.
