An inspiring book review on a lovely and timeless novel

Many have surely heard of the lovely classic "Heidi" by the Swiss author Johanna Spyri.

The novel was first published in 1880 with the second part following in 1881, finding its place on so many bookshelves to this very day.

The book is about a young girl named Heidi and her adventures in the beautiful Swiss Alps.

It is a very special part of my library, for it is such a beautiful, heartfelt classic that is worth a read every time.

The novel features topics like family and friendship, the love for nature and the beauty of simplicity in life, making it a timeless book that is a part of so many people’s childhoods.

So let’s dive in:

Heidi is an orphaned young girl who is sent to live with her reclusive grandfather in a remote cabin in the mountains.

Despite her grandfather’s gruff demeanour, Heidi’s cheerful and loving nature gradually softens his heart.

She thrives in the idyllic alpine environment, befriending a young goat herder named Peter and embracing the simple joys of her delightful mountain life.

Heidi is perfectly happy. She wakes up every day to a new, wonderful day in her little attic room, from which she can look out through a round window at the beautiful Swiss mountain landscape.

Later, Heidi is taken to Frankfurt to live with the wealthy Sesemann family as a companion to their disabled daughter, Clara.

While in the city, Heidi experiences strong homesickness and longs to be back in the mountains again. She struggles with the constraints of urban life.

Eventually, Heidi returns to the Alps, finally living the simple, happy life she always dreamt of in Frankfurt.

Heidi’s warmth and optimism help Clara recover her health when she visits her friend in Switzerland.

Heidi’s longing for the mountains, her deep connection with her beloved grandfather, and her love for the beauty of nature are central to her character.

The story concludes with a happy ending, where everyone’s life gets a bit better, and Heidi’s cup of happiness overflows for everything is just the way she wanted it to be.

The novel shows how nature is one’s friend, and what a good effect country life has on the spirit.

Heidi’s close friendship with Peter and Clara, and the unbreakable bond with her grandfather drive the plot, showing how love and friendship guide her journey.

And of course, Heidi’s attachment to her cherished mountains, connecting her to the life she was meant to live.

Heidi has an infectious positivity that lights up the lives of everyone she meets.

Her cheerful, bright, and caring nature connect with the young readership, inspiring them with her optimism and love for life.

Johanna Spyri beautifully describes the majestic Swiss Alps, that draw you right in, and make you feel as if you were part of the story.

As though you were running together with Heidi and Joseph -her loyal friend the Bernese mountain dog- along the lush meadows, or herding the goats together with young Peter.

The novel invites you to read about a life of freedom and joy, among the beautiful mountains in rural nature.

Altogether, Heidi remains one of the most beloved children's books, appreciated for its vivid descriptions of the Swiss Alps and its timeless lessons about compassion and the human spirit.

It is a beautiful and classic "feel-good novel" for both young and old.

If you haven’t read this heartwarming story yet, then make sure to check it out, it is surely worth discovering!

Thank you for reading!

I had this book when I was a kid and there was a dramatisation of it on the TV too, the theme tune of which is humming in my head as I write this comment. I could sense the love you have for this book.

Great book review of a classic. Have read many times and plan to read again. Some would say a girl's book, but it is an every person's book.

It looks like a wholesome book 💖 I'm currently reading; "A Thousand Splendid Suns", and 4 more books waiting in the line. Otherwise, I would've given it a try 😃✨
