Iron Flame Summary
Following the vengeful assault on the military base of Athebyne during the War Games, Violet is recuperating from her wounds at Aretia, which is in the Tyrrendor Province of Navarre. Within three days, her entire world has been completely upended. It is revealed that Xaden Riorson, the third-year cadet with whom she has fallen in love, was a member of a covert uprising that was thought to have been put down years prior. Some of her classmates who made it through the onslaught are now participating in the uprising alongside her.
Violet is shocked when her brother Brennan, who was thought to have died in rebel battles six years earlier, turns out to be the rebellion's leader. Furthermore, it comes out that the existence of the venin, black magic wielders that ride wyverns and take strength from the soil, is a dreadful reality that threatens the continent rather than only being a piece of folklore from her father's stories. These facts have been kept secret by the kingdom's rulers, who have protected their subjects with magic wards to ward off the venin.
Until Violet can strengthen her mind with a mental shield to keep away Dain Aetos, a former friend who can read memories, Brennan and Xaden decide to keep some information about the rebellion from her. Violet withdraws from Xaden until he consents to be totally open with her since she feels deceived. In the meantime, one of Violet's bonded dragons, Andarna, goes through the important Dreamless Sleep in the Vale phase in order to develop into an adult dragon. For their graduation, Violet and Xaden go back to Basgiath.
However, if they dare to tell the truth about the venin, Colonel Aetos, who planned their risky journey to Athebyne, threatens to have terrible repercussions for their friends and family. Dain makes a failed attempt to make amends with Violet, unaware of the depth of his betrayal. After graduating, Violet is given weekends off to visit Xaden at the border outpost of Samara while their dragons complete their mating bond.
Violet is barred from taking part in the rebels' attempts to smuggle alloy daggers to the gryphon fliers of Poromiel as she starts her second year at Basgiath War College. Major Burton Varrish, who assumes the role of the vice commandant and singles out Violet for punishment if Andarna does not show up for flight maneuvers, further exacerbates this marginalization. Prince Cam, Violet's childhood buddy, secretly joins her squad on Conscription Day as Aaric Graycastle.
As this is going on, survivors of the Athebyne attack begin to meet unexplained deaths at the hands of Colonel Aetos's killers. Violet separates herself from her friends in order to protect them from harm, and she asks her friend Jesinia, a scribe, to assist her in researching the First Six's history of building the defensive wards surrounding Navarre. Violet continues to keep this inquiry a secret from Xaden, who maintains withholding information from her, despite her mounting frustration.
In their second year of the Rider Survival Course (RSC), Violet and her friends fail in cooperative land navigation drills with infantry, scribe, and healer teams alike. Tensions increase when a signet-blocking elixir breaks their dragon ties and signet powers. As their Battle Brief lecturer minimizes venin attacks, Violet grows more and more agitated in class. When Xaden learns of Violet's investigation into the wards, tensions between them increase, and he accuses her of demanding one-sided trust.
It is harder and harder to keep secrets, especially from her best friend Rhiannon and sister Mira. Violet tells Rhiannon about the targeted murders of their fellow Athebyne survivors as well as Dain's signet. In contrast to his father, King Tauri, Aaric tells Violet that he is aware of the venin and that he wants to fight them. During the RSC, Violet and her allies are eventually put through an interrogation task. Varrish tries to get information out of her, even using Dain's signet, but his attempts are unsuccessful.
After being covertly cured, Jack Barlowe, whom Violet thought she had murdered with her lightning power the year before, unexpectedly attends class again. Violet finds out that Samara was the victim of a gryphon attack that seriously damaged Xaden. Disregarding convention, she leaves her job to visit him, only to discover that he has fully recovered. By enlisting her to deliver smuggled daggers to gryphon fliers, such as Xaden's ex-girlfriend Catriona "Cat" Cordella, he then shows her even greater trust. To defend Violet against Venin, he gives her an alloy dagger.
Violet must, however, conceal the dagger from Major Varrish when she returns to college. The dagger is securely hidden in Violet's room thanks to her friend Rhiannon's signet power. However, Violet ends up telling Rhiannon, Sawyer, and Ridoc everything as a result. Together, they come up with a scheme to enter the Archives' sublevel vault and take the First Six's journals, which are essential to learning the truth.
Nolon, the healer, finds Violet in possession of Lyra's journal during the theft and hands it over to Major Varrish. As Violet endures days of suffering, visions of her departed buddy Liam Mairi fortify her determination. She tells him everything through her memories, and in a bold turn of events, Dain steps in to assist her getaway. They reveal the truth to the Basgiath students with Xaden's prompt arrival, which causes a mass desertion to Aretia.
More than 200 riders and dragons congregate in Aretia, and Mira soon follows as General Sorrengail tells further riders the truth. Under the direction of Assembly member Felix, Violet goes through a rigorous training program to master her lightning skills. Despite obstacles, such as an unsuccessful attempt to raise Aretia's wards, Violet, Mira, and Brennan depart for Cordyn to obtain the luminary from Viscount Tecarus.
They meet Xaden there and deal with sensitive situations, such as Violet's recent alliance with Cat. By learning to weave Tyrrish runes and overcoming unforeseen obstacles like an attack by Varrish's dragon, Solas, they cement the links between riders and fliers. Their will to battle the venin and the repressive rule is unwavering in the face of setbacks, including the death of a rider.
Now with Dain's help, Violet continues to retranslate Warrick's journal. Together, they fix previous mistakes and discover a fresh way to use dragon fire from each of the six dragon caves to activate the wards. Aretia's wards are effective in stopping a wyvern attack, but they are not perfect. Xaden is given the ability to predict intentions before they are carried out after Violet finds out about his hidden second signet.
