Haunting Adeline Summary

After her grandmother, Serafina, dies, Adeline goes back to her childhood home in Washington and chooses to live at Serafina's family home, Parsons Manor. Adeline is lured to Parsons Manor's Gothic, Victorian charm in spite of her mother Sarina's disapproval, hoping to find comfort and a way to reconnect with her deceased grandmother. Adeline is an accomplished young writer who loves having the manor's comforts to herself while working on her literature. Her newfound haven is abruptly destroyed, though, as she discovers that she is the victim of a persistent stalker—as evidenced by the frequent break-ins and the unnerving presence of roses left behind.

Adeline's friend Daya invites her to social events in an effort to lift her spirits. As a result, Adeline meets Arch, a man she brings home one evening. Her stalker becomes enraged by this seemingly innocent deed, which leads to a terrifying sequence in which Arch is kidnapped, tortured, and killed, with his severed hands given to Adeline as a perverted symbol of ownership and power.

In the middle of the growing danger, Adeline discovers her great-grandmother Gigi's journals stashed away in a secret safe. His covert activities entail breaking into trafficking networks in order to save victims—a goal that feeds his infatuation with Adeline.

Zade finds himself in a moral bind when he gives in to the temptation to control and torment Adeline, despite his admirable goals to stop the horrors perpetrated by traffickers. Adeline's great-grandmother, Gigi, and her husband Frank Williams's best friend, Senator Mark Williams, are members of the Society, and Zade teams up with Adeline to look into him. They attend a party at Mark's house and try to get answers, but they can't. But when Satan's Affair, a haunted home festival, shows up in the area, Mark threatens to kidnap Adeline, making their search more intense.

After striking up an odd friendship with a young woman named Sybil, Zade acts decisively, killing Mark and three other Society members, finding their headquarters, and coming up with an infiltration strategy. In the meantime, Adeline and Zade's bond grows stronger as a result of Adeline's willing intimacy, a dynamic that may have been inspired by Stockholm Syndrome, a condition in which victims of abuse get attached to their abusers. In addition, Zade takes on the job of Adeline's personal trainer, teaching her how to defend herself in case the Society poses a threat.

Zade arranges his admission into the covert organization by taking use of his relationship with Daniel Boveri, a fellow member of the Society.
