Coming Soon: Coming to Africa
Historical Figures in the Founding of Liberia by Gbitee Doryen Gbitee

At a time when global conversations on identity, race, and cultural heritage are more relevant than ever, Gbitee Doryen Gbitee is preparing to deliver a powerful reflection on history and belonging.
His forthcoming book, Coming to Africa: Historical Figures in the Founding of Liberia, reexamines how freed African Americans, once enslaved in the United States, returned to West Africa to establish a new nation built on freedom, resilience, and faith.
A Long Overdue Retelling of a Shared Past
For more than two centuries, the story of Liberia’s founding has been told largely through fragmented narratives and colonial records. Gbitee’s work reconnects the missing links, showing how the dreams of African Americans seeking self-determination intertwined with the lives and politics of West African leaders.
Coming to Africa presents this history not as a footnote to slavery, but as a testament to human will and cultural identity, a meeting point of two worlds that continues to shape African and African American heritage today.
History Through Human Stories
Drawing on meticulous research, archival materials, and personal reflection, Gbitee reintroduces readers to the men and women, both African and American, who transformed displacement into nationhood.
Among the themes explored in the book are:
• The Back-to-Africa Movement and the role of freed slaves in shaping Liberia’s independence.
• The moral contradictions of American colonization, from abolitionist idealism to racial politics.
• Cultural negotiation between returning settlers and indigenous leaders.
• The enduring legacy of diaspora identity, belonging, and self-governance.
A Voice Connecting Two Continents
“This book bridges the gap between cultural and educational understanding of how freed African Americans helped establish Liberia, connecting two worlds through shared history and perseverance,”
— Gbitee Doryen Gbitee, Author of Coming to Africa
With an academic’s precision and a storyteller’s heart, Gbitee offers a new way of seeing a familiar struggle, the pursuit of freedom and the meaning of home. His book invites readers, educators, and historians alike to reexamine the moral and cultural foundations of both Africa and America.
