If you love the book thief this is a definite read for you this book combines the thrill of reading with the fantasy of escape and that books are so much more than just books. Which honestly in today's world I think is needed especially considering that in America books are being banned for being books and expressing views which is just a whole another topic that I'm not gonna get into.
The world in which this book creates is phenomenal and the fact that it allows us to do what I think we all want books to do and that it's a true true escape from everything. Like which one of us as readers as a kid did not wish that we could just go into the story that we were reading and escape or think that our books have like a magical quality to them which in this book they actually do.
Honestly as I write this thinking about the book it's very much Book Thief meets Inkheart in a sense Because of that which Harkins back to a different era of reading for me that I appreciate. Back when these fantasy worlds would be an escape from childhood and make you want childhood to be so much more and now you realize that they really just helped you lock on to what your childhood was.
For me at least 2 with how this book was of keeping these magical books almost hidden from people who want to use them for ill intent is very much like how we are with our favorite books in a sense because like you never want to give away your favorite book to someone who you don't think will appreciate it for what the masterpiece you think it is so it's very much like almost this like secret society and secret that people are holding on to with these books which is very interesting and like applying it to the real world standpoint.
As a book however getting back on track the writing is phenomenal the story is fantastic and interesting and engaging right from the jump like there's no point of it where you feel a lull in the story. Also it does present this really interesting new take on time travel which I've very much liked kind of showing how the past already happens and you can't change it but you can learn from it which I think is new because every other thing that you see with time travel it's the past is this taboo area where one if you pick a blade of grass the future has changed.
It also showcases how there is like an innocence to books like there's an innocent quality that you want to preserve with reading books and I'm very OK with that because it feels true like regardless of how terrible things are going on in the world almost books are an escape and they're pure to this story and with the story is something so innocent you kind of want to hold on and grasp that and keep it so I really like that the book does that.
Honestly like I'm not sure where Gareth brown is from but in his writing it's almost as though the villain of this book being that she wants to collect and do all these mean things to books is kind of like accurate with how society is now with books trying to censor how what books are available to children to be able to kind of warp their minds and not showcase the broad expanse of beautiful world's books so there are certain members in society that are trying to gather all of these books that are banned and hide them to preserve them. Which is kind of scary because like that's also what happened during World War 2 with the Nazis and how they would burn books that didn't uphold their values so like there's a lot more with this book than just the story if you allow your mind to wander.
Which honestly is kind of parallel to the name of the book book of doors because it's closing the door on one way of thinking about books and opening a new one and closing the door on certain people's society trying to hide these books and allowing these books to remain available to the public in a secret library.
