A Song for You

Bridging the distance

By Emma TevesPublished 11 months ago 1 min read

Mia sat on the rooftop, her guitar resting on her lap. The night breeze swept through her hair, the chill barely registering as she focused on the melody in her mind. The sky was dark, dotted with distant stars, but it felt warmer here, in this quiet moment. She strummed the strings softly, the tune reminding her of home—not a place, but a person.

Ella.

Her thoughts drifted to their last conversation, the way Ella’s laugh had felt like a warm embrace, even through the phone. She closed her eyes, letting the melody flow. The lyrics weren’t perfect yet, and they might never be. But the emotion was there—love, longing, hope. And maybe that was enough.

Her phone buzzed, pulling her from the song. She glanced at the screen. A message from Ella:

“What are you doing, love?”

Mia smiled, fingers stilling on the guitar strings as she quickly tapped a reply. “Writing you a song. You’ll hear it soon.”

The reply came almost immediately: “I can’t wait. I miss you so much.”

Mia couldn’t help but sigh as she read the words. She stared up at the sky, feeling the ache in her chest. The distance between them felt unbearable some days, especially when moments like this made her feel closer to Ella than anything else. She whispered softly to the moon, “Me too.”

She strummed a few chords, letting the sound fill the empty air around her. The song was a reminder, a piece of her sent across the miles. It wasn’t enough to close the gap, to erase the ache of missing someone so deeply, but it was something. Something real, something heartfelt. She knew that one day, she’d play it for Ella in person—no screens, no text messages—just the two of them, under the same sky, with the sound of the guitar filling the silence.

Until then, the song would have to be enough. And in that quiet, heartfelt moment, Mia knew that one day, love and distance wouldn’t matter anymore. It would just be them.
