A Gothic Descent into Cursed Realms and Forbidden Desires

A review on "Anathema"

By Morgana SteelePublished 10 months ago 2 min read

Keri Lake's "Anathema," the first installment of The Eating Woods duology, weaves a captivating tapestry of gothic dark fantasy, plunging readers into a world of forbidden boundaries, cursed souls, and grotesque creatures. The narrative centers on Maevyth Bronwick, a shunned woman forced to venture beyond the mortal realm's edge, into the terrifying and alluring depths of Witch Knell.

The atmosphere is thick with dread and mystery. Witch Knell, known as The Eating Woods, is a place of whispered horrors, a forest where sinners are said to meet their demise. The villagers, steeped in fear and superstition, warn against venturing near its misty depths. Yet, Maevyth, driven by a tragic twist of fate, dares to cross the archway of bones, stepping into a world that defies mortal comprehension.

Beyond the veil lies Eidolon, a dark and fantastical realm ruled by Zevander Rydainn, the cursed lord and assassin known as The Scorpion. Zevander, tasked with protecting Maevyth from the magehood that seeks her destruction, views her as a burden, a mere pawn in his struggle against an arcane prophecy. His initial disdain, however, masks a growing obsession, fueled by Maevyth's irresistible allure and the realization that her blood holds the key to breaking his curse.

Lake masterfully crafts a world that is both beautiful and terrifying. The gothic atmosphere permeates every aspect of the narrative, from the eerie depths of Witch Knell to the shadowed halls of Eidolon. The creatures that inhabit this realm are grotesque and formidable, adding to the sense of danger and unease.

The relationship between Maevyth and Zevander is a slow-burn romance, fraught with tension and conflicting desires. Zevander's initial coldness and resistance gradually give way to a possessive obsession, while Maevyth's resilience and determination challenge his preconceived notions. The dynamic between them is complex and compelling, driven by a mixture of fear, attraction, and a shared destiny.

The narrative is rich in detail and intrigue, with a unique magic system and a plot that keeps the reader guessing. The theme of forbidden knowledge and the consequences of crossing boundaries is central to the story, adding a layer of moral complexity to the characters' actions. The prophesied evil that slumbers in Witch Knell casts a long shadow over the narrative, creating a sense of impending doom.

"Anathema" is a compelling blend of gothic dark fantasy, romance, and horror. Lake's evocative writing and intricate world-building create a truly immersive experience, drawing readers into the depths of Witch Knell and the tangled web of Maevyth and Zevander's destinies. The book's atmospheric setting, complex characters, and slow-burn romance make it a captivating read for those who enjoy dark and fantastical tales.
