Oh my god! Stephen King has surprised everyone again. With every new Stephen King book, I understand a new aspect of his writing. "11/22/63" made me realize that again. This book represents the highest level of King's writing, especially in his tone and character development. In "The Stand" I loved the vastness of the story and its amazing execution, while in "Pet Sematary" he portrayed grief and deep human emotions very well. "The Outsider" proved that Stephen King can still write books that match his old classics. But "11/22/63" was a new aspect, one that was hard to understand even for me, but it was very King-moral.
The ending of this book was really great. Stephen King's books usually have weak endings, but this book's ending was really great. There were a few minor mistakes, but overall the ending was so impressive that I found it hard to hold back my tears.
The story of the book and King's amazing perspective
The story of this book revolves around a man who tries to prevent the assassination of JFK by going back in time. He finds a portal to travel through time, and that is where the story begins. In this journey he pursues Lee Harvey Oswald to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but in the meantime he experiences living in an older time. Stephen King lightly hints at the social issues of the time during this time, but never goes too deep, which was a good decision.
This is the way King used it which I really liked. He also showed how the man tries to live a new life in the old times. During this time he falls in love and there are many things that he has to decide in between his journey. This book is also connected to "Derry, Maine", which is a big attraction for Stephen King fans, as it is the same city that appears in books like "It".
Expanding King's literary universe
King has also expanded his vast universe in this book. We see the children of "It", giant turtles, and other deep King references. All of this proves that King is now adding even deeper to his literary universe. This book reveals even more of his bigger ideas. The expansion of this universe was extremely exciting to me and it makes me excited for more Stephen King books to come.
Is this a horror book?
Stephen King's books usually create fear, tension and deep curiosity, but "11/22/63" did not have that traditional scare factor. It has some horror elements and supernatural events, but it becomes more of a suspense thriller book that raises questions about time travel and historical events. In this regard, it is different from King's other books. So if you are looking for a traditional Stephen King horror book, this book may not be that scary.
Some issues and criticisms
There were some minor issues, such as some decisions in "Derry, Maine" that felt a little odd. It felt a little weird to have a new character enter a place we're already very familiar with. Although King handled it well, I think it would have been better if it was rewritten with more thought.
Also, when you read a Stephen King book, you expect a certain amount of fear and nerves. This book did not have that. It was more of a suspense thriller and less of a horror. However, as you read the book, this problem also gets solved because the story itself is so strong.
Overall thoughts
I would recommend this book to every Stephen King fan, but if you are new to King then don't read this book first. Instead start with books like "Pet Sematary" this s book is an amazing entry into King's universe and a must for his fans.
