I’m a bit different when it comes to hair. I don’t do trendy hairstyles. I don’t like hours at the hair salon and I really dislike burning tools that I’m incompetent to use.
This revelation allows me to express my tresses. I prefer gorgeous and unique styles. My weapon is antiquated hair rollers. These little talked about rollers are a staple in my personal beauty arsenal and make my hair stylish but not in style hair.
My hair is long and I favor old fashioned rollers. Don’t even stop reading. Please reference the rollers in the photo and don’t gasp. Yes, they’re outdated but if you want a sexy new look give them a shot. I’m about to introduce you into a world of hairstyles you want but never get.
Want beachy waves? Try those long foam bendy sticks. Get the ones in fabulous colors for kicks. Love that retro movie star look your favorite celebrity sported at an awards show? Get out grandma’s antiquated sponge rollers. Those are the pink ones in the photo. Have super straight hair and want the look of natural curly hair? Try both.
Forget the sleek and shiny hair products. Say so long to the clunky tools with heat settings that could damage your lovely face more than your hair. Put down the hair dryer and roll out brushes. I’m a proponent of old fashioned hair tools because the outcome is amazing. They provide beachy, retro, wicked curly hair that will last for days with a little dry shampoo.
I picked up my rollers at the dollar store. You can find them at any big box store. Nice hair doesn’t have to cost big hair bucks. Get a few packages. You need about 20 plus rollers and you’re ready.
Let your washed hair dry until slightly damp then put in some mousse or gel. Get the roots good. The alcohol will keep your hair from getting oily. I use smaller sections for tight curls and larger sections for big curls. I roll from the ends and wind upwards but roll them anyway you like.
Got an entire day inside the house? This fabulous hair D.I.Y. Is for you. If not, get ready for a crazy night of rollers hitting your head on the pillow. I didn’t promise comfort but it’s so worth it.
In the morning or later in the day, depending when you put them in, make sure your hair is dry and unwind those overlooked laughed at rollers. Now go ahead and marvel at your new luscious naturally curled hair locks.
Hair way to kinky curly? Don’t panic. Take out your brush and keep combing. The tighter you wind the roller the tighter the curl. It’s a learning curve.
Hello Veronica Lake meets Marilyn Monroe. You’ve transformed your hair into old Hollywood flair. Guaranteed to turn heads, if you practice.
I’ve been on this roller head trip off and on for years. It’s allowed me to change up my style and hair length. I promise it’s an instant haircut. The curls will make your hair about one to two inches shorter.
Get ready to skip the daunting hair wash routine for at least three days. Spray in your favorite dry hair shampoo at the roots and underneath for long lasting style. On a side note, do use dry hair shampoo for major volume and hairspray. It works.
The rollers I pictured give two looks. Long foam tubes are for super tight beachy waves and the regular pink rollers create the glamour girl look you crave.
It takes a bit of trial and error. I apologize in advance for super curly hair. Remember, looser rolling if you’re curl shy. I do promise even savvy hair know-it-alls will inquire and you’ll be the one with the great hair.
If you’re one for trendy looks make this your trend. If you’re ready to ditch the hair tools and go on a hair dare then have fun retro rolling! Either way, it’s way easier than a YouTube hair cutting tutorial and there’s no risk.
If you love it, welcome to the retro revolution of hair. If it’s not for you wash it right out. Happy hair!
