Pandemic Shenanigans

Home job tattoos

By Louise SlyPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

What happens in the pandemic, stays in the pandemic. Well, not everything, a home job tattoo is a little harder to keep a secret, since it is permanently etched into your skin and people tend to notice things like that.

I never considered myself to be the type of person who would ever get a dodgy home job tattoo. Mainly due to the risks of infection being too high, but if you have been forced to go into lockdown like I have, logic goes out the window and anything goes. Sorry mum.

My housemate who is covered in tattoos thought it would be a great idea to order a tattoo gun off the internet. You really can get anything off there. When they arrived, I was out doing my essential grocery shop, he sent me a photo of the gun and supplies with the caption ready for prison tatts?

I was not ready, especially after the tatts that he gave himself. Leave it to the professionals. My sister ended up getting one off him, a coloured flower and the FOMO (fear of missing out) kicked in. He mentioned that he had ordered special tattoo stencil paper and that gave me some confidence that my tattoo wouldn’t turn out like a distorted smiley face.

I had no idea what kind of smiley face I wanted. Google helped with that decision, thanks Google. I went with a classic one, as I thought it looked like a pretty simple design that you couldn’t stuff up too bad. My housemate stuffed up the lines a bit, but thankfully he fixed it, not that I actually thought it was and didn’t notice what he said was wrong with it. As you can see in the image it is quite a thick black line, to cover the supposed stuff ups which was not the intention at first, but I actually love how it turned out.

The tattoo turned out to be a good decision instead of a regret. My housemate did a great job and it didn’t get infected. A win win situation for all. Just because I had some luck with a home job tattoo, doesn’t mean you will, I suggest not trying this at home but getting a professional to do it, as you can guarantee that they practice good hygiene and the tattoo will look how you want it to on your body. Or just pull a me and blame it on corona, 2020 the year that anything goes. No one would question your sanity or logic if you get a home tattoo done now, well that is what I am counting on. I even sent a photo to my mum and she didn’t yell at me for being irresponsible and that is shocking, she would be so against home job tattoos, but maybe it is 2020, or maybe it is the fact that I continue to make bad decisions, we will never know.

I bet you want to know why a smiley face. That is too predictable or that isn’t original, it has been done a million times before, yeah you probably right, but here is the thing, I have a constant reminder on my foot to smile, or to be happy. The little guy oozes with happiness and I want to do. It is my daily reminder that the pandemic will blow over and it will be alright. This tattoo is permanent, but the virus isn’t, that is the beauty of it. Will I regret this? Maybe later down the track, but for now, I love it and everything it stands for. It is a reminder that I am here in the moment and I am living, despite how tough it is. Life is too not to get a shitty home job tattoo, anyone that is ‘cool’ has one. I am proof that home job tattoo is not a dirty word.
