I have long thick hair and wear it in a ponytail many times during warm weather to keep it off my shoulders. Perhaps it was Facebook marketing that got me on this one and made me interested in trying this product. Ads for the Pony O popped up everywhere for me on a daily basis for weeks, until I finally gave in and decided to give this product a try. I usually ignore marking ads but in this case, it was a product I could see myself using if it actually worked. It's hit or miss with many highly marketed products, but I know some actual work and are a good idea. I liked the idea of a ponytail with more style and volume that were shown in the photos of girls using the Pony O. I wanted something a little different than the standard ponytail I was used to getting using hair elastics but I was also looking for something that would also hold my hair in place and be good for summer months when the weather is hot. I wanted something I could wear while going for walks or being outside in warm weather. I figured why not try this thing. Reviews I read for the Pony O online were good for the most part and the high ponytails that were achieved while using the Pony O were cute.
I have thick hair and purchased the wider version of the Pony O thinking it would work best for my hair type. It also comes in a thinner version that looks to be more suitable for those with thinner or shorter hair. I was hoping it would give me more hold and keep my hair in place. The Pony O is a plastic moldable type ring. It feels like it has a metal wire in it to help it keep its shape and there are rubbery grippy type bumps on the inside of it to help hold your hair in place. I followed the directions on the card that came with it that said to make a flat shape once your hair was through it and then bend each side in half to form a ring under it to form the circle ponytail shape. It took me a few tries to get it right and the top part of my hair looked flat on most of the attempts. It felt very loose in my hair. I was used to a tight close to my head ponytail. It was about half an inch away from my head which felt odd. The Pony O does not have a tight hold, like I was used to with hair elastics or other hair ties that I use.
I have thick hair and this product didn't hold my hair in place. If you have thinner hair, it may work for you. I found if I put my hair in a ponytail using a hair elastic first and then put the Pony O over my hair already in a ponytail that it did look cute and had much better hold. But this is by no means a stand-alone product. It is loose in my hair by itself and doesn't feel secure. My hair also started to come out of it while it was in without any movement and my head didn't look smooth like it does with a hair elastic. I had weird bumps near my scalp and my hair looked messy but in a bad way. Do not run or walk fast with this product in your hair. It will come right out and fall to your feet. I wore in while going for a jog and it came right out of my hair. You may even lose it and leave it behind you. Pony O is not an exercise-friendly product and easily comes out of your hair with movement.
Another con of the Pony O is that it doesn't stretch any and it was not large enough to put around my wrist. I have a habit of putting my hair ties on my wrist when I am not using them and I was not able to do this with the Pony O.
Overall, I would not purchase the Pony O hair product again. It cost $8.99 and comes in a variety of different colors and patterns. It does not work well for thick hair and easily came out of my hair. This product is a fail for me and a thumbs down.
