Be Prepared to Get Messages from Strangers as Facebook Updates its Feeds

Facebook New Updates and What They Mean

By Emma AdePublished about a year ago 3 min read

Meta, the owner of Facebook is exploring ways to collapse barriers to the free flow of information. They have decided to give their users more recommended content, especially through their newest updates. To this end, Meta has announced new changes to Facebook and Messenger at its IRL event in Texas and the new update will include multiple tabs. New changes made include the following;

1. A Local Tab

This will show content from Facebook Marketplace, groups, and events near your location.

2. Explore Tab

This new feature resembles the Instagram tab and shows posts curated by an internal algorithm, personalized to your interests.

3. Reels Tab

This is often displayed on Facebook’s Navigation and comes with a full-screen video player for seamless scrolling.

4. Expanded Events Invite

This feature will allow users to invite guests to RSVP to their event pages via email and SMS.

5. AI Search (Groups)

Group members can use this feature to search for answers or posts that attend to previously asked questions within a community.

6. Matchmaker for Dating

This new feature helps you and your friends select matches for dating and friendship.

7. Music and Mentions in Notes

This feature is located in Messenger and allows several expressive functionalities to create conversations.

8. Memories and Communities

This feature is located in Messenger and will give users some throwbacks of shared content alongside options to curate group messages around specific topics without creating a new group.

What Do These Feature Upgrades Mean?

There are quite a number of new things that will occur with Facebook’s feature upgrades. For instance, while users will continue to interact with and view their friends’ activities from the Facebook Homepage, the newly introduced or upgraded tabs will highlight content discovery from other users you are not even following.

This means data from your previous likes, shares, and comments will drive more content from strangers. According to Meta, these new features will help young adults and all other Facebook users explore their interests while connecting on a platform beyond their friends’ circles.

According to Meta, these cool features will be rolled out to users at different speeds. Features like the Facebook Dating Matchmaker will be part of the first to be released in the coming days. Other features will slowly be released after the testing stage in countries like the US and Canada. The local tab is currently undergoing testing at the company’s offices in Austin, Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco.

The new announcement marks a continuous shift by social media platforms in delivering recommended content to users. This was demonstrated by platforms like TikTok and Twitter (X) in the last 5 years alone.

Meta has taken a bold step towards delivering recommended content in its feeds and it is also embracing an algorithm that can predict and display the posts users will likely engage with most. Instagram is another social media network that is not left behind in the new rave. Its “Explore” page is also based on the user’s interaction with other content on the platform.

Meta is also using this opportunity to launch itself as a One-stop shop for all social offerings using its updates in Groups and Events and Monetization opportunities to bring more users to its platform and retain them while fighting off competition from their rivals like TikTok, and Twitter(X).

With its shares rising by 23% in the second quarter of the year and after the launch of its AI chatbots and language learning models, Meta has had a very big year and will continue to make giant strides in the social networking World. Mark Zuckerberg, the majority owner of the platform has also moved several steps up in the Forbes rich list to become the second richest person in the world.
