Willem James Cowan Explores Regret and Reflection with New Single Jam Jar
A Folk-Rock Journey Through Self-Doubt and Emotional Growth

Willem James Cowan returns with his powerful new single, "Jam Jar," a raw and introspective track that delves into themes of self-reflection, emotional missteps, and the mental loops that follow. Wrapped in a striking folk-rock sound, the song captures the feeling of being stuck in spiraling thoughts, overwhelmed by guilt and regret.
The inspiration for "Jam Jar" stems from a heated argument with Cowan's then-girlfriend. Following the disagreement, Cowan found himself lost in thought while riding a Toronto streetcar home, attempting to understand the situation from her perspective. "We were out at a party, and I was at fault," Cowan recalls. "While we were on our way home, I tried to imagine things from her shoes—buried in a grave I designed." The song's narrative feels deeply personal yet universally relatable, touching on vulnerability, guilt, and the difficulty of taking responsibility for one’s actions.
The title "Jam Jar" holds symbolic weight, inspired by a lyric in the opening verse: "My empty head now weighs a ton, I should really sell it to someone floating inside a jam jar." Originally titled "Bell Jar" in reference to Sylvia Plath’s novel, Cowan decided to change the name to shift focus away from a direct literary homage. Instead, "Jam Jar" captures the feeling of entrapment, exhaustion, and frustration that often comes with making the same mistakes over and over.
The track’s production marks a shift from Cowan’s recent experimentation with electronic textures, instead embracing a straightforward folk-rock approach. "This song kind of asked to just be a straight-up folk-rock song," Cowan explains. "Sometimes the best choice is the easiest one." The song’s bridge stands out for its stark sense of isolation, mimicking the spiraling thoughts that often accompany regret. As the track reaches its conclusion, the music swells back into the main melody, offering a sense of emotional release and closure.
One of Cowan’s favorite lyrics from "Jam Jar" reflects his ability to merge evocative imagery with emotional weight: "Too late to toss out all the vulgar things I wrote down. They stained the table underneath." Cowan describes this line as particularly powerful. "I like the imagery of it," he shares. "It’s a pretty straightforward metaphor that people can likely relate to. We've all had those moments of saying or writing something in frustration and regretting it later."
"Jam Jar" marks another impressive entry in Cowan’s expanding body of work, further exploring his recurring themes of anxiety, relationships, and mental health. While much of his catalog balances emotional vulnerability with energetic arrangements, "Jam Jar" leans into a more introspective tone. The result is a song that feels both deeply personal and widely accessible, resonating with anyone who has faced regret or wrestled with inner turmoil.
Since 2018, Cowan’s music has been steadily capturing audiences across eastern Canada. Through three releases and numerous singles, he has earned a reputation for blending folk traditions with contemporary sounds. His thoughtful lyricism pairs with lush instrumentation, creating songs that reveal quiet truths while carrying listeners forward.
Often performing alongside a collective of musicians known as The Friends of the Cove, Cowan’s work ranges from stripped-back acoustic reflections to grander, full-band arrangements. His 2022 full-length album, Mourning in the Morningtime, reflects this balance, pairing confessional lyrics with layered instrumentation. On the title track, Cowan sings that he is "out of thoughts and out of rhymes," a moment of vulnerable reflection that mirrors the themes explored in "Jam Jar."
Willem James Cowan’s ability to transform personal moments into universally relatable songs has become a defining trait of his artistry. With "Jam Jar," he continues to explore the complexities of regret, emotional growth, and the challenge of moving forward. Combining heartfelt lyrics with a compelling folk-rock sound, Cowan offers listeners a space to reflect, connect, and find comfort in shared experiences.
