"We were out at a party, and I was at fault," Cowan recalls. "While we were on our way home, I tried to imagine things from her shoes—buried in a grave I designed." The title "Jam Jar" holds symbolic weight, inspired by a lyric in the opening verse: "My empty head now weighs a ton, I should really sell it to someone floating inside a jam jar." Originally titled "Bell Jar" in reference to Sylvia Plath’s novel, Cowan decided to change the name to shift focus away from a direct literary homage. Instead, "Jam Jar" captures the feeling of entrapment, exhaustion, and frustration that often comes with making the same mistakes over and over.

"This song kind of asked to just be a straight-up folk-rock song," Cowan explains. "Sometimes the best choice is the easiest one."
