Why Fall in Love when You can Rock n Roll
Anti Love in Rock n Roll

I've known for a while now that my taste in music is somewhat different from other people around my age. Most listen to modern music and when it comes to songs that are themed against love it's most likely not rock music they are listening to. Classic rock is an acquired taste, I get that. One thing I think many people can agree on is that rock is not a genre that one would find, let's say, "heartbreaking" songs. It's more about rocking out as hard as possible or as ACDC likes to say being "shook all night long."
Some songs can easily be misinterpreted upon the first listen though.
I've spent probably hundreds of hours listening to this music and studying the sound and lyrics. Most songs that I've come across that are from the rock genre and related to love are ultimately about being in love but I managed to find some that are not. So, now I'm going to share with you just a few of what I believe make perfect Anti–Valentine songs. Quite possibly even with a little twist.
To start I Hate Myself for Loving You by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
Now I realize that upon first listen it may seem more of a love song, something along the lines of "please come back" and "I need you." After taking a look at the lyrics it leans more towards betrayal and mistrust along with the complete longing. In my opinion, it's not a love song. When I listen to it I like to scream along and think of the ex that cheated on me. Besides, it’s literally called "I hate myself for loving you."
Love Bites by Def Leppard
Now, anyone who's ever had their heart broken probably understands this song more than they would like to admit. I mean, love truly does bite sometimes and we all understand that in one sense or another. It’s certainly an anti-love song especially when you hear the lyrics "love lives, love dies. Love bites, love bleeds." And it's true. Screw love. Not really but y'know what I know mean.
Love Hurts by Nazareth
This one could be said the same way as the last one, lord knows hearing this song hits hard when you've just gotten heartbroken. But hey, don't we all love a little cry sometimes.
It Must Have Been Love by Roxette
Look, I bet I know what you're thinking, but hear me out. This isn't entirely anti-love or rock but for some reason, it's sometimes placed on rock charts and I don't question it so you shouldn't either. But, think about it, you're in your room on v-day and you've got this song turned up high but you're singing it in the most dramatic possible way you can. It brings out a good laugh by the end if you really play it out well too. Fall to your knees, close your eyes while holding a hairbrush. It's the perfect mock at valentine's day.
You're No Good by Van Halen
Don’t the lyrics "Well I'm feelin' better now that we're through. Feelin' better baby, I'm over you" just make you feel good right after a breakup. Just dancing in your room or driving in your car with that blasting as loud as you can take it. It's perfect.
I Used to Love Her by Guns N Rose's
This one is a little more on the humorous side because apparently the song was written after a dog died and had to be buried. Truly an inspiring way to talk about love, right? Just bury it.
Here's a list of some more that I'm not entirely sure why they come off as anti-valentine to me. Some of them just scream being mad because of love and others are literally saying love just sucks. Every time I hear them I can’t help but think "this is definitely not pro-love." It may sound like it at first but the lyrics say something else.
Big Shot by Billy Joel
What it Takes by Aerosmith
This Love by Pantera
Love Is for Suckers by Twisted Sister
Bringin On the Heart Break by Def Leppard
So Lonely by The Police
Go Your Own by Way Fleetwood Mac
Love Stinks by J. Girls Band
The Break-Up Song by The Greg Kihn Band
Head Games by Foreigner
Personally, valentine's day hasn't been much of a positive day to me. I've spent too many sulking over someone or too many never being with someone. There have been too many breakups that were done too close to Valentine's day and some that happened on the day itself. We all have our reasons for disliking the so-called holiday. Some years I really hate seeing everyone in love and others I love seeing it. Most years I can't help but think of how we should be celebrating love every day instead of just the one.
Unfortunately too many have been negative and I'm single as a pringle, so this year ill be listening to all my favorite rock songs singing about things I probably won’t be doing anytime soon. But, I know that I will always have this music to fall back on. Yes, these songs aren't your usual definition of anti-love but they help distract from life sometimes.
Besides, why would you want to worry about falling in love when you can be rock n rollin!
