What did Meatloaf mean?
The meaning of this wonderful song
As only Meatloaf can tell this story and sing the song behind it. I am sure this has happened to all of us at one time or another. I know it happened to me, but it wasn't a female. I had been dating this boy for about a month and I went to see him. He put this song on, but the words he said to me were I hate you, I hate you, I never ever loved you. Then his mother escorted me out of the house. I learned a valuable lesson that day and it was not all relationships in the gay community work out either.
I went to school the next day and I was down in the dumps. My cousin said to me what's wrong? I told her and she said lets go across the street to the park and talk. She said I am sorry you are hurting, but you are a kind, sensitive and beautiful person don't ever stop being that way. She said break ups happen in the heterosexual world as well, remember your parents? She said the reason this hurts so bad is because there are fewer gays to choose from. She kissed my cheek and said we have ten minute before the bell rings and please dry your tears. As we got to the school grounds she said show me your beautiful smile and I did. She kissed my cheek again and told me to have a good day.
In this song Meatloaf explains that there was only one girl that he really ever loved and that she said this to him as she got out their bed. Let's look at the music facts about this song. It is a track off his 1977 album Bat Out of Hell, written by Jim Steinman. It reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a million-selling Gold single from the RIAA, eventually being certified platinum. It remains his second highest-charting hit in the US, behind "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", and stands as one of his career signature tunes, still enjoying recurrent airplay. I have always loved Meatloaf even his song Paradise by the Dashboard light.
I was able to overcome that brief heartache at school that day. My cousin came over to me at the end of the day and said I have a friend you should meet. As we were introduced my cousin told me that this boy wouldn't treat me like the last boy had and she was right. We dated each other for about six months before he and his parents moved out of state.
This song and Paradise by the Dashboard light are my two favorite songs by Meatloaf. Normally I don't listen to much of his music. This man is extremely talented and can sing. This is the type of song that can invoke a painful memory as it did for me, but it can also invoke a wonderful memory as well. That's how music works to invoke feeling, emotion and to really bring you up if you are down.
When I was in the military we weren't allowed to have personal radios in the field while on training exercises. We were however allowed to have them when we went to the rear for days off, mail call, laundry and showers. Luckily we didn't have too many stereo wars as mostly everyone liked the same kind of music. This made life a little easier for everyone involved.
In this song he depicts crying icicle instead of tears because the person had been so cold to him. So what does that line mean? What message is this song trying to convey? Here is the answer, The clue is the line, "But you've been cold to me so long."
The girl from his past and the girl he is singing to is the same girl. She broke his heart in the past and said there was no way she was ever going to love him, over and over. And now that she's changed her mind, it's too late. He still has the want and need for her, but he can't feel the love for her anymore. She'd killed his love for her already.
He speaks of her in the third person because she's no longer the person she was to him. I hope this explains the lines and the meaning of the song.
