Total Fucking Darkness Take It Easy Brings Fire Smoke and a Sheep or Two

A rave anthem wrapped in irony sarcasm and a warning not to relax

By Chris AdamsPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

In a world spinning faster toward absurdity with each passing hour, Total Fucking Darkness offers not comfort but confrontation. Their latest single Take It Easy is anything but soothing. It’s a thundering, gleefully deranged slice of rave chaos that dances right on the edge of collapse. The title feels like a joke whispered by a ghost in a burning building. And yes, it is meant exactly that way.

Take It Easy marks the triumphant and completely unhinged return of a band that never really went anywhere, because Total Fucking Darkness has always been more than a band. It’s an idea. A threat. A dare. A dancefloor reckoning.

The track was written live and in real time. The words were scribbled down by Torquil Campbell on a first listen, fueled entirely by rage, caffeine, and instinct. “He was muttering things into the mic, eyes closed, looking like someone trying to dislodge a wasp from their subconscious,” recalls Stephen Ramsay, who handles guitars and atmosphere while also standing just on the handsome side of tall. Tom McFall, a studio wizard whose credits include REM and Bloc Party, pulled everything together in the way only British engineers can—by acting unimpressed until something magnificent happens.

As for the sheep, they are real. They are in the track. They are not ironic. Or maybe they are. Ramsay reflects: “It’s not the only song I’ve heard this year with sheep in it. And I’ve realized something important—there has never been a bad song with sheep in it. Honestly. Think about it.” That’s probably true.

Musically, Take It Easy hits with pulsing energy, driven by jagged synths, percussive stabs, and a groove that feels like the floor might give out beneath you. The lyrics swing between spoken incantation and shouted command. The result is a dance song you can cry to, scream to, laugh to, or just collapse under. It's an ode to everything unraveling, and a celebration of not going quietly.

“This song hopefully feels like a piece of fibreglass under your fingernail,” Ramsay adds. “In a good way.” That might sound painful, but it’s meant to jar you awake. Total Fucking Darkness does not make background music. They make music that taps you on the shoulder, kicks your shins, and then invites you to the party.

And that party is coming. On May 29th, 2025, at Montreal’s legendary Newspeak venue, the first official Total Fucking Darkness event will commence. It will be loud, disorienting, and most importantly, fun. The invitation is clear and exclusive—no hippies, no jocks, no nerds, no bullies, no victims. Ravers only. Even the kind who never actually go out. Especially them.

Pirates, actual or imagined, receive a twenty percent discount at the door. Proof of piracy may include but is not limited to an eyepatch, parrot, tattered map, or nautical demeanor. Sunglasses are encouraged. Gas masks are not mandatory but may become essential. Gas itself is optional, depending on how prepared you like to be.

• LISTEN TO “TAKE IT EASY” HERE •

Take It Easy has already begun to carve out a place as one of those rare tracks that dares listeners to feel everything at once. It's music for end-times dancefloors, late-night warehouse hallucinations, and people who want their groove to come with a slight sense of danger. There is no moral here, no message of comfort. There is only sound, sweat, static, and one strange metaphor after another.

Total Fucking Darkness continues to blur the line between satire and sincerity, chaos and craft. Whether you’re here for the rave, the rage, or just the sheep, Take It Easy delivers with wild energy and zero apologies. It asks nothing more than your full attention and maybe a little bit of your soul.

So dance. Scream. Don’t relax. And remember—what surrounds the stars in the sky is total fucking darkness. And what’s probably about to become your new favorite dance act is too.
