After 10 years together, it seems that the love story of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth is at an end. If you want to know the defining moments of their relationship, then listen to Miley's music. That's the beauty of being a musician. Her songs are like pages of her diary and she lets us the fans receive the intimate details.

Four of Miley's hit songs highlight those defining moments with Liam. "When I Look At You" is when they first met. "Wrecking Ball" was the first time they broke up. "Malibu" was when they got back together. And finally, there's "Slide Away," an official goodbye.

Love At First Sight

It may have written for the film The Last Song, but "When I Look At You" could very well represent Miley and Liam's first moments together. The couple first met at the auditions for this romantic drama in 2009. Miley was infatuated right away by the Australian actor.

I was a little bit nervous with everything. But then, he opened the door for me and I was like, “That was good! He’s got the part!” Julie Ann was like, “Let’s read with him first,” and I was like, “He’s got it! I don’t care!”

So, Miley practically handpicked Liam Hemsworth to play her love interest. I guess it pays to be a gentleman. Any viewer who watches the Nicholas Sparks adaption can see the chemistry between the two stars immediately. The whole premise of "When I Look At You" is about love at first sight. For Miley and Liam, that happened at an audition.

The First Heartbreak

Perhaps, more people remember the controversial music video for "Wrecking Ball" rather than the actual song. However, Miley's intention was to show her vulnerable side. Breaking up is hard to do, especially if you live in the spotlight.

In 2013, Miley started the Bangerz era of her career. The infamous performance on the VMAs immortalized as the princess of twerking. Unfortunately, her life behind the scenes was falling apart. It was reported that Liam was not comfortable with Miley's wild behavior. Sadly, the couple did break up later that year. Now, "Wrecking Ball" was recorded before the break-up, but one could speculate that the song became about Liam.

Reunited and it Feels So Good!

Three years later, Miley and Liam reconcile and rekindled their romance. Then in 2017, Cyrus releases her laid back summer hit "Malibu". The song is about falling in love again with Liam and takes inspiration from the Malibu home they lived in together. All kinds of rumors about the relationship were spreading so with this song Miley decided to "put the power back in my relationship."

Perhaps, all things happen for a reason. Perhaps, Miley and Liam needed time apart to make things work.

"I needed to change so much," she[Miley] said. "And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard. Suddenly you’re like, 'I don’t recognize you anymore.' We had to refall for each other."

Time went goes by and the couple appeared more in love than ever. Losing their beach home to the Woosley fire in 2018 inspired them to get married in December. Everything seemed perfect for them, but not all good things are meant to last.

The End of the Road

Just a couple months ago, a rep of Miley Cyrus confirmed to the media that Cyrus and her husband Liam decided to separate after less than a year of marriage. This is the statement that was given to People magazine:

Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.

The older you get, the more you change. Perhaps, Miley and Liam grew apart. Shortly after the announcement, Miley released her new single, "Slide Away," which directly addresses her divorce. It appears that Cyrus is ready to move on for good this time. She even dated model Kaitlynn Carter for a brief time before calling it quits.

As much as we want Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth to stay together, it seems their fairy tale is officially over. They both have to do what's best for themselves. On the bright side, this 10-year love story gave us some great music. I'm sure there is more to come.
