This was far from Swift’s first memorable VMAs, although she’d likely agree that last night’s events were memorable for far more enjoyable reasons. At the 2009 VMAs, Kanye West interrupted one of Swift’s acceptance speeches to insist that Beyoncé was more deserving of the award Swift had received. Other VMAs have also had other notable events occur, including Britney Spears’ iconic performance with a live python and Madonna’s shocking performance of her song “Like a Virgin” at the first-ever VMAs.

Last night’s VMAs also saw Katy Perry receive the Video Vanguard Award in recognition of her career. Perry performed a medley of her iconic hits like “I Kissed a Girl” and “Firework” and shared a heartfelt acceptance speech thanking her fans, the LGBTQ+ community, and her family. She also acknowledged husband Orlando Bloom and their daughter Daisy.
