The Duality of Singing
Memoirs of a Musician
##
|| I dedicate these words to all those that have encountered the angel of music ||
Music is a curious thing don't you think?
When we are young, we naturally start to develop abilities both consciously and subliminally. The habits we are conscientiously aware of usually consist of things of those in the social and cultural norms ie: "proper" behaviors etc. The subliminal habits are the ones that differentiate those from others . The creative mind The innate ability to see the world with a wider perspective. You see the world through a different lens. Gestures are more animated, colors are brighter, cartoons are funnier and just an natural interaction with the creative nature.
The ones that are lucky enough to have their talent discovered and developed from a young age get the chance to manifest their potential creativity, but curiously this creates a poison within the system . Natural Ability can't be forced to manifest, and unfortunately , like the bark of a tree, it develops its strength with time. No matter how beautiful the flower, if you saturate it with water, it withers and dies.
Since being a CREATIVE is innate, just like nature the artistic instinct follows the same rules of the natural world. When rushed, that Creative will lose sight of their art since it manifests within them with so little effort. They lose interest in their own complexity and never get a true chance to really see how far the rabbit hole goes and what their capable of. It's really one of the first conflicts we face with the "normal" world. Within these words, I want to emphasize the double-sided broadsword that is being a Creative in any craft but more about the very specific and personal instrument of the Voice.
#Essence of the Voice
The vocalist is a unique type of creative. It is not like any other musical instrument. Unlike all the other ways of making music, the singer is literally affected by everything. Now let me explain how everything (EXPLICIT) with us.
IN ORDER TO BE A SUCCESSFUL VOCALIST, YOU MUST EXPRESS THE FEELING OF THE PIECE.
Okay so now how do we do this?
By allowing and Completely surrendering to the music . Consciently becoming vulnerable in order to identify the emotion and meaning behind the given song. By doing this, it allows ways to express with our voices full-heartedly and genuinely to connect the writers work and with the ears of the world.
The problem that arises by this conscient decision to surrender is , that leaving that very specific mindset becomes at times very difficult and ironically , the more you master your craft, the harder it will be to protect yourself from bad vibes thus falling prey to the evil of the world.
## The biggest wrench to a singers world.
Since vocalist don't have the luxury of hiding their emotion due to its effect on performance, It is nearly impossible to try to sway a negative feeling when you have to sing an admirable song. Its really not like brass or strings that can be ignored for a period of time and if taken care of, it can be picked up , dusted and played. A singer doesn't have that privilege.
WE ARE OUR VOICE.
Don't believe me? Ever started crying when you're about sing? Can you breath? my point exactly. Once you're at a certain level of ability, the inner conflict becomes quality over quantity. A great performance that is up to a certain standard. Whatever that standard might be. Whatever it takes. This conflict is one of the first headaches creatives face.
## The "Gift"
One of the first senses that is functioning in the womb is hearing. This is why its a very modern practice of putting headphones on the stomach of a pregnant woman is done. The baby from the womb reacts physically to the sound. The frequency of their moms' voice makes the unborn child move because even though the infant is far from being fully developed, the frequency is biologically familiar. It is the same reason why a newborn is calmed from its first cry by being placed on their mother's chest. the familiar heartbeat. The sense of touch is now available and it provides reassurance by instinctively correlating the frequency with its origin; the womb.
Our voice is developed by a variate of all senses. We cry when most necessaries are needed and we learn to speak by listening and observing way of physically saying the word appropriately. We also learn cadence and develop a critical interpretation of vocabulary.
Now when this creative discovers the melodic spectrum, it throws them into the spiral. They get overwhelmed by this new, exciting feeling while not knowing why. They have an appreciation for the unfamiliar relationship between the notes, the arrangement, and the singer. Usually, this happens early in life. In my case, I was 4.
