Victoria BC indie rock band The Bankes Brothers return with their most dynamic release yet, the EP Where Do We Go From Here?, produced by Gus Van Go. The collection features the high energy lead single "Waited All Night" and builds on the band’s reputation for infectious live shows and timeless rock and roll spirit. With this EP, the group continues to carve out their place as one of Canada’s most exciting emerging acts.
The EP also includes recent singles "Bedroom Wall," "Get To Know," and the title track "Where Do We Go From Here?" Each song highlights a different facet of the band’s songwriting and musical personality. Nelson Bankes, lead vocals and guitars, reflects on the collaboration with Gus Van Go, known for his work with The Beaches, Arkells, and Hollerado. “He was great at opening us up to the mindset of ‘serve the song,’ and the production style and choices were a direct result of that,” he explains. The producer’s guidance helped the band focus on capturing the emotional core of each track while pushing their sound into bigger, bolder territory.
Lyrically, "Waited All Night" explores the frustration of being strung along by someone you care about and the liberation that comes with letting go. The song distills the band’s gift for combining anthemic hooks with raw emotional honesty, making it a standout both on record and in live performance. Nelson shares a glimpse into the song’s creation: “This one came together after a long travel day, and little to no sleep. We walked into the studio, and our producer (Gus Van Go) gave us enough caffeine to kill a small animal. All we had was a verse, chorus, and a ‘lion sleeps tonight’ rhythm in a voice memo, but after several coffees and a few martinis we managed to get the lyrics and a new bridge written in a day, and it’s become a band favourite from the EP.”
“I’ve waited all night to make you mine”
There is an undeniable chemistry when The Bankes Brothers take the stage, a mix of raw energy, tight musicianship, and the cohesion that comes from growing up together. The band is fronted by brothers Nelson and Morgan Bankes on vocals and guitar, with Carson Cleaver on lead guitar and Gray Oxley on drums. Their energetic performances and hook filled sound have carried them across Canada and overseas, including a UK tour with Red Rum Club and packed festival sets, with fans belting out songs that have not even been released yet.
Following their debut EP In Waves, produced by Steve Bays of Hot Hot Heat and The Zolas, The Bankes Brothers are entering a new chapter. Where Do We Go From Here? is a collection of indie rock songs built for the stage, each one demonstrating the band’s growth in sound and ambition. The release showcases their ability to create music that resonates in the live arena while also translating into compelling recordings for listeners at home.
Morgan Bankes offers insight into what fans can expect next. “We just hope you like the music; there’s more on the way, and we’re really only scratching the surface of what we’re sitting on,” he says. “These songs are part of a larger waterfall into a full length album, and I think our sound is starting to emerge.” The EP is both a celebration of where the band has been and a hint at the expansive new directions they are exploring.
With Where Do We Go From Here? and the anthemic "Waited All Night," The Bankes Brothers continue to establish themselves as a band capable of capturing both youthful energy and mature songwriting in one package. The EP solidifies their place in Canada’s indie rock landscape and points toward an even larger future full of promise, creativity, and stage ready rock songs.
