Singer-Songwriter David Jane Marks the Beginning of a New Musical Era on Contemplative, Pleading Single
“Garden Out Back” is out now

Toronto-based singer-songwriter and filmmaker David Jane has a unique relationship with pop culture: he is both obsessed with it and detached from it. This duality informs his work, giving him a distinct voice and perspective. His songs often reflect feelings of disconnection, uncertainty, and desire, expressed through honest, raw lyrics that mirror his own introspective musings. Jane’s art is rooted in his ability to capture the complexity of contemporary emotions, offering listeners a window into his personal experiences and a mirror to their own.
David Jane first introduced himself to the music scene with his debut EP, Welcome to Today, released in 2020. The project showcased his early songwriting skills and set the stage for his journey as a multi-talented artist. However, Jane’s creativity isn’t limited to music. After releasing the EP, he felt a strong pull towards another long-held passion: filmmaking. This led him to enroll at the Vancouver Film School, a decision that would prove transformative both personally and artistically.
At the Vancouver Film School, David Jane found a vibrant community that reignited his creative spirit. Surrounded by fellow artists, he experienced a surge of inspiration, engaging in a dynamic environment that encouraged exploration and collaboration. It was here that Jane experienced falling in love for the first time, a profound milestone that shaped both his personal life and artistic output. The time in Vancouver became a period of significant growth, filled with creative projects, new friendships, and a deepening sense of purpose. However, like all good stories, this chapter eventually came to an end, and Jane returned home to Toronto, changed in unexpected ways.
Coming back to Toronto proved to be more challenging than David Jane had anticipated. He returned with a heart and mind full of memories from Vancouver, only to find that home felt unfamiliar, as though the life he had lived there existed in a separate, suspended reality. The transition left him feeling disoriented and out of place, but this sense of alienation became a source of creative energy. In trying to reconnect with his surroundings, Jane found himself rediscovering his voice as a songwriter. He began writing again, channeling the experiences of love, adventure, and loss he had faced in Vancouver into new music.
David’s latest single, “Garden Out Back,” marks the beginning of a new era for him as an artist. It is the first release from a series of songs that he describes as being frozen in time, capturing the poignant beauty of fleeting moments. The song reflects on Jane’s time in Vancouver, drawing from the slow, painful ending of a relationship that began there. “Garden Out Back” opens with a sense of resignation, portraying the helplessness that often accompanies long-distance relationships. The lyrics convey the struggle of trying to hold onto something that feels inevitably out of reach. As the song progresses, it builds into a powerful expression of yearning, a plea to return to a past that now feels like a distant dream.
“Garden Out Back” is Jane’s second collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Sam Arion, best known for his work under the solo project Mute Choir. The partnership has proven to be a fruitful one, with Arion helping to shape the song’s distinctive sound. Reflecting on their collaboration, Jane notes, “What’s been so great about working with Sam is that he’s able to create these deeply contemplative, ambient sonic atmospheres within the typical acoustic, somewhat traditional/folk-inspired structures I gravitate towards. The end-product then becomes this mix of traditional acoustic, lyric-focused songwriting that still centralizes the vocalist and the words while seamlessly pairing that with a very modern, contemplative, atmospheric soundscape.”
The result is a song that feels both familiar and fresh, combining the intimacy of folk-inspired songwriting with the expansive textures of modern production.
Beyond music, David Jane’s creative journey continues to intersect with his passion for film. Following his studies at Vancouver Film School, he wrote, directed, and produced his first short film, Apnea. The film, an exploration of fear and memory, is set to premiere at Toronto’s Blood in the Snow horror festival this November. This debut marks another significant milestone in Jane’s artistic career, showcasing his versatility as a storyteller across different mediums.
With “Garden Out Back,” David Jane offers a glimpse into the next chapter of his music career, blending heartfelt songwriting with innovative production. It’s a compelling start to a new phase, one that promises to explore the complexities of human emotion and experience with a sincerity that is unmistakably his own. As he steps into this new era, both in music and film, Jane remains committed to creating art that is honest, reflective, and deeply personal.
