Sara Carreira died yesterday, Saturday 5, in a car crash in the Portuguese main highway (A1), between Santarém and Cartaxo in the Póvoa da Isenta area. She was only 21 and the daughter of acclaimed singer and songwriter Tony Carreira.

Sara was on the passenger seat of a Range Rover Evoke driven by her boyfriend, the singer Ivo Lucas. Lucas lost control of the car for reasons yet to be determined, and the SUV tumbled across the highway and was hit by another car.

The police force (GNR) and medical first responders (INEM) confirmed the death at the crash scene.

Shortly after, the news of a young 21-year world woman's death started circulating on all media channels. However, at that time, they weren’t disclosing the victim's identity as the family hadn’t yet been informed.

However, CMTV informed that singer Bárbara Bandeira and her boyfriend, ‘Kasha’, lead singer of DAMA rushed to the Santarém Hospital after the accident. Knowing how Bárbara was a dear friend to Sara, we all feared the worst had happened to the Carreira's youngest daughter.

Rock n’Heavy knew at that point that it was Sara who had died, but we also refrained from disclosing it until the moment when CMTV shared that the family was already at the Santaém Hospital. Only then we shared our grief on social media, paying our respects to the Carreira clan.

The tragedy has even gloomier contours, as Sara Carreira turned 21 on October 21; however, only on Friday, December 4, the eve of her death, she celebrated the date.

The news spread like wildfire. First among family and friends; afterward on social media.

The hashtags #sara and #saracarreira overwhelmed Twitter as Sara’s friends started to grieve her death.

Singer Agir was among the first who reacted on social network Instagram to honor Sara Carreira. After a first publication, Agir shared a video where he sings in tribute to the late singer.

Many other celebrities followed, sharing the common voice in shock because of the tragic event.

On Friday, December 4, while Sara was celebrating her birthday, I wrote a piece about the tragedy of death at a young age: Those Whom the Gods Love Still Die Young in 2020. Looking back at it, I feel overwhelmed by the puzzling rules of fate that claim such bright young stars.

We are all made of molecules and atoms. If we could look deeper inside us, we would find the same matter present in any star. That unique, inextinguishable fire connects us all to the infinite. Humanity is a galaxy made of billions of stars shining across an endless Universe.

My final thoughts go to you, Sara. Tonight we gave you back to infinity, and in grief, we light our candle to your memory, as on this night, a new star was born in the infinite skies above.

Whom the Gods love die young, it’s a proverb of ancient wisdom. Certainly imagination, which creates new worlds; and Art, which portrays them in works, are the amazing signs of this divine love. Gods do not grant these gifts so that we are happy, but so that we can become their peers.

Whoever loves, loves only an equal, because we make others our equals by loving them. We cannot be rivals to the Gods, because Destiny separated them, neither human nor God ascends by divine love (…). — Fernando Pessoa, Publ. in “Athena”, nº 2. Lisbon: Nov. 1924.
