Toronto-based alternative R&B artist Puma June continues her fearless creative evolution with the release of the striking visual for “Nobody,” the latest video from her debut EP A Woman That They Want. Released earlier this year, the EP boldly explores themes of identity, power, and liberation—and “Nobody” stands as its most provocative and visually immersive statement yet.

Blending surrealist imagery with powerful symbolism, “Nobody” dives deep into the complexities of bodily autonomy, inner conflict, and self-perception. Set against a genre-blending sonic landscape that’s equal parts smooth, edgy, and haunting, the track invites listeners and viewers alike to confront the contradictions within themselves.

A conceptual standout, the video for “Nobody” is a fashion-forward, multi-layered work of self-expression, shot in Los Angeles and directed by long-time collaborator Arden Grier. The collaboration brings to life Puma June’s dreamlike artistic world—a place where absurdity meets intention, where every surreal image serves as both a question and an answer.

The title itself plays with duality—“Nobody” versus “no body”—highlighting the central themes of self-worth and the invisible battles waged within. Puma June challenges us to ask: are we oppressed by outside forces, or are we limiting ourselves from the inside?

“When we eat the enemy inside ourselves, the outside voices are just noise, and we take back our autonomy. My favourite moment from the video is when I swallow myself and we have one final reveal with the tattooed brows. I actually shaved my eyebrows for that one shot. It ties into everything this EP is about – bodily autonomy and radical self-love.” – Puma June

From a dramatic shot in which Puma June literally swallows herself, to a stylized eyebrow reveal that required her to shave her brows for a single scene, the video pulls no punches in its commitment to artistic vision. That moment—both literal and metaphorical—captures the essence of her work: reclaiming selfhood through discomfort, transformation, and boldness.

Another scene that nearly didn’t happen involved a concept originally intended to include live ants. A failed Amazon order turned into an unexpected detour through Facebook insect groups, ultimately ending with a substitution no less symbolic: ladybugs.

Every scene pulses with intention. Whether she’s donning a Dolce & Gabbana x Skims bodysuit with a unibrow, or transforming into a ‘60s housewife clad in chaps, fashion becomes its own narrator, helping tell the story of a woman who refuses to be boxed in—by society, by aesthetics, or by expectation.

The visual language of “Nobody” is as rich as its sonic world. Its costume design, choreography, and symbolic imagery pull from a broad palette of references—from art house cinema to Instagram maximalism—but the execution is entirely Puma June. There’s a raw confidence in how she leans into her contradictions, merging the grotesque and the glamorous, the vulnerable and the empowered.

“I hope this video sparks conversation about what different moments symbolize. I want people to derive their own meaning from those weird, edgy, out-of-place scenes.” – Puma June

That open-endedness—her invitation to the audience to interpret, to question, and to feel—is at the heart of “Nobody.” Puma June is not prescribing answers. Instead, she’s creating space for ambiguity, for self-reflection, and for radical honesty.

“Nobody” solidifies Puma June not just as a musician, but as a visionary multidisciplinary artist. With each frame, she pushes back against conformity and expectation, reclaiming her image and her narrative on her own terms. As with every chapter in A Woman That They Want, this new release challenges us to rethink what it means to be seen, to be whole, and to be ourselves—no matter how strange, uncomfortable, or beautiful that might be.

This video for “Nobody” sounds really thought-provoking. The blend of surreal imagery and themes of bodily autonomy is fascinating. It makes me wonder how viewers will interpret all those layers. And shaving her brows for a shot? That's dedication. What did you think was the most impactful part of the video?
