Peter Landi Releases New Single "Somewhere"

A Reflection on Uncertainty and Finding Stability Through Music

By Chris AdamsPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Peter Landi, a talented multi-instrumentalist originally from the East End of Long Island, New York, has steadily built a reputation as an accomplished musician and songwriter. Now based in Toronto, Canada, where he has lived for nearly a decade, Landi's journey has taken him from basement jam sessions in his hometown to stages around the globe. His unwavering commitment to creating great music has been the driving force behind his diverse career, spanning genres and collaborations with numerous artists.

Shortly after settling in Toronto, Landi became the drummer for Canadian punk band Single Mothers. From there, he quickly became a sought-after session and touring drummer, working with artists such as Julianna Riolino, Espanola, Eamon McGrath, and The Drew Thomson Foundation. His versatility and passion for music have earned him a reputation as a reliable collaborator and performer.

The global shutdown in March 2020 brought much of the music industry to a halt, and like many of his peers, Landi found himself grappling with an uncertain future. With tours canceled and downtime on his hands, he revisited his collection of demos, sparking a new phase in his songwriting. This creative period culminated in a series of singles showcasing his introspective lyrics and a bold sonic evolution. His debut single, High, even earned a spot in the critically acclaimed IFC Canadian slasher film In A Violent Nature, further cementing his status as a dynamic artist to watch.

Landi's latest single, Somewhere, continues his exploration of deeply personal themes. The song captures the uncertainty he and his partner faced during the early days of the pandemic. Displaced from their regular routines, separated by borders at times, and unsure of what the future held, they found solace in simply being together. Inspired by their daily walks without a destination and their shared resilience in navigating an unpredictable world, Somewhere serves as a poignant reflection on love and adaptability during difficult times.

“It was such an unstable period,” Landi explains. “We didn’t know what tomorrow would bring, let alone the rest of the year. But as long as we could be together, it felt like everything would be okay. Those long walks without a plan inspired this song—it’s about finding peace in the unknown.”

The recording of Somewhere was a collaborative process that showcased Landi's versatility as a musician and producer. While initially recording and arranging the song himself, Landi sought the expertise of co-producer and engineer Tyler Semrick-Palmateer to bring a fresh perspective to the track.

“I thought the song was finished,” Landi recalls. “But when I played it for Tyler, he said, ‘This is great, but we should run it through my console to warm it up.’ The difference was incredible. That sparked more collaboration—we re-tracked the vocals at Tyler’s studio, drums at my place, and kept the guitar parts I had recorded. The bass line, sent over by Ross Miller, tied it all together. Tyler’s background in heavier music gave this song an edge I hadn’t envisioned—it took my Oasis-inspired idea and gave it a ‘Down on the Upside’-era Soundgarden vibe.”

The result is a track that feels timeless yet modern, full of lush instrumentation, heartfelt lyrics, and hooks that linger in your mind long after the song ends. Drawing influence from legends like Tom Petty, Oasis, and Queens of the Stone Age, Landi manages to create music that pays homage to his inspirations while sounding distinctly his own.

Somewhere is another example of Landi’s knack for crafting songs with emotional resonance and memorable melodies. His ability to translate personal experiences into universally relatable music is what sets him apart as an artist.

With Somewhere and his growing catalog of singles, Peter Landi continues to prove himself as a compelling voice in the indie and alt-rock scenes. As he moves forward in his career, his dedication to authentic storytelling and innovative production ensures that his music will resonate with listeners everywhere.
