Blending Blues Rock Grit with Americana Soul

Toronto-based rock & roll troubadour Nelson Sobral is back with his latest album, três!, featuring the standout single "Must've Done Something Right." With its blues rock edge and soulful Americana spirit, the track dives headfirst into themes of living on the edge, taking risks, and somehow landing on your feet. Packed with sharp wit and a groove that won’t quit, "Must've Done Something Right" delivers Sobral's reflections on life’s unpredictable journey with his signature charm and swagger.
The song’s inspiration came from a quiet moment during a family vacation in Japan. Watching his wife play with their two young sons, Sobral found himself reflecting on his mischievous past and the unexpected good fortune that followed him through it all. The track blends tongue-in-cheek storytelling with heartfelt gratitude, creating a relatable narrative for anyone who’s stumbled along the way but still found themselves standing tall.
The title nods to Sobral’s love of classic country music, mirroring the witty and self-aware songwriting tradition of legends like Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. While "Must've Done Something Right" leans heavily into rootsy Americana vibes, Sobral infuses it with a raw rock & roll spirit that gives the track its own distinctive edge. It’s a song that speaks to risk-takers, troublemakers, and anyone who’s navigated life’s chaos and found a little redemption along the way.
"It gives me a chuckle reminiscing about my past and where I am today," Sobral shares. "It’s unique to my life and perspective but universal to all troublemakers worldwide."
três! was recorded live off the floor at RHC Studios, capturing Sobral’s gritty, authentic sound in its purest form. The album’s raw energy stems from Sobral’s decision to record live, with main guitar and drum parts tracked together in one take. This unfiltered approach amplifies the album’s emotional core, blending rock & roll, blues rock, and Americana influences into a sound that feels both timeless and immediate.
Sobral faced numerous personal and professional challenges while creating três!, and there were moments he considered abandoning the project altogether. "So many challenges, personal and professional, almost made me scrap it," Sobral recalls. "But I knew this set of songs needed to live together on an album."
While Americana often conjures images of wide-open landscapes and dusty highways, Sobral’s interpretation carries a distinct urban edge shaped by Toronto’s gritty Parkdale neighborhood. His sound weaves together northern soul, blues-drenched guitar riffs, and rock swagger, painting a raw and honest portrait of city life.
Drawing inspiration from a range of influences, Sobral’s songwriting channels the heartfelt storytelling of Hank Williams and Gram Parsons while blending in the soulful power of Otis Redding’s vocal delivery. His ability to merge these elements with modern production creates a sound that feels classic yet fresh.
I must’ve done something right, in this lifetime of wrong
Must’ve had a chorus of angels follow me along
I know there ain’t nothing good ‘bout being so bad
I had a couple winning streaks but you’re the best run I had
Sobral’s stage presence is equally magnetic. With a road-tested career that’s seen him share stages with David Wilcox, The Trews, and Jeff Healey, Sobral’s powerful voice and electric guitar style command attention in any venue. His performances capture the grit, heartache, and triumph that flow through his music, connecting deeply with audiences who recognize their own struggles in his songs.
três! is more than just a collection of songs — it’s a reflection of Sobral’s journey, filled with stories of love, loss, and hard-earned wisdom. With "Must've Done Something Right" leading the charge, Nelson Sobral delivers a sound that’s authentic, heartfelt, and impossible to ignore.
