MK's Technicolor Performance at Prysm Nightclub - Chicago
a love affair with night life has been reignited

Back at my stomping grounds, across the velvet rope and with the electrifying touch of multicolored strobe lights is where I feel most at home. Right away, your senses are greeted by an intense mix of signature scent fragrances and the booming of the bass which hugs my insides and shrinks my pupils as I immerse myself further into the dance floor.

Chicago’s Prysm Nightclub hosted Marc Kinchen, better known as MK, a prolific household name in the house music sphere known best for his collaborations with the likes of Becky Hill, Dom Dolla and Sonny Fodera, joined the stage this Saturday night. He’s achieved over 2 billion streams across various music platforms and has continued to win over house hearts throughout his career by blending bouncy bass lines with catchy vocals. This marriage of sound conceives a perfect concoction of songs that can be heard casually or on the dance floor.

He blends classic house influences with modern electronic sounds. As a matter of fact, many of you may have heard commercial success anthems such as “17” and “Piece of Me” featuring the vocals of Becky Hill and of course my absolute favorite song to make out to... "One Night" featuring Raphaella. Becky Hill has recently given MK the go ahead to remix one of her new tracks, Swim, off of their “Do You Believe Me Now?” record praising him for being one of the most talented and genuine producers she has ever worked with.

This past weekend, we had the privilege of dancing under the strobe lights to the tunes of this eclectic blend…joining him on stage were Dem2, CTRL, and ohlogo (Logan Jay). The strobe lights flickered from indigo blue to crimson red giving off a very “blood on the dancefloor” type of vibe. The crowd’s groove to the rhythm of the music was interpretative from fidget spinner dancing to head bobbing to grinding to my signature swaying, there was something for everyone. As I embraced the space around me, I had this thought that the strobe lights were fascinating, but their magnetic flair could easily send someone into an epileptic seizure.

For someone like me, who lives and breathes house music, it transported me into another dimension and forced me to be in the present. I danced with strangers I’ve never met, yet felt like I’ve known them all my life and that’s when it hit me. Duh, house music is the soul of Chicago and this is why we’re all so connected. Prior to this event, I haven’t been clubbing out in Chicago for over a couple years and it intrigued me to know how much the space has changed. I mostly feared that we’ve lost the ambiance, the spark and the community of PLUR; but I stand corrected. This electric culture is still alive and well, but the club fashion sense has gotten a little lazy leaving a lot to be desired.

A decade ago, every outfit was carefully curated and meticulously thought out with accessories and unique accents galore. Nowadays…it’s a little bit too predictable and H&M commercial matte…which is fine. Fashion is supposed to be subjectively interpretive, but nevertheless we danced the night away.

MK set the stage ablaze at 1:30am and debuted the “Swim” remix in his repertoire alongside “I Can’t Control It”interloped with Halsey’s vocals from “Without You” heading into a very bass in your face transition. At one point, the bass has once again thumped in my heart and looking up at the ceiling, I realized that she is back…MK made me realize that while this evening had been filled with numerous dance tracks and was formally supposed to be his night, it resurrected something in me…a love affair with Chicago night life. I can’t wait to twirl like a mirrorball once again very soon.
