mgk's new album

Lost Americana

I love Machine Gun Kelly. I think I have about 60 of his songs saved to my Spotify right now. My partner says he fell off and sold out but I strongly disagree with him. He just released a new album on August 8th titled "Lost Americana" after his break-up with Megan Fox and let's just say I am here for it.

Little backstory, Machine Gun Kelly's real name is Colson Baker, and he is from Texas originally. Born in 1990, his family struggled financially while growing up. He got the nickname "Machine Gun Kelly" while in high school due to his rapid fire flow. He continued to build a reputation over the years as a rebellious, outspoken figure in hip-hop.

MGK’s journey is one of constant transformation. He’s been the underdog rapper, the controversial figure in hip-hop feuds, the pop-punk savior, and even a movie star. What brings it all together is his refusal to settle. Every reinvention is a reminder for him that music isn’t about fitting in, it’s about creating your own lane, no matter how many people doubt you along the way.

Without further ado, here is my song analysis for the album:

outlaw overture

All the pages are blank 'til my life goes to shit

I know I do that on purpose just to write again

I loved this line, and personally, I think this is why mgk and Megan Fox broke up. From the research I did, he lied to her about drug usage, not about other women like the tabloids are saying. It's hard watching someone you love destroy themselves in general let alone for their art.

cliché

Tell me, would you wait for me?

Baby, I'm a rolling stone

I got a lotta right in me

But I don't wanna say this wrong

I am a huge fan of this one. This song was coined the song of the summer according to fans on TikTok. The sad version is so much more powerful than the happy, upbeat melody of the original.

dont wait run fast

I got a problem I don't need to define

She's my reason, my reason for decline

I don't overly like this one that much but I love this line within the song. It just isn't really my favourite song the album. Just wait, the last three songs of the album are *chefs kiss* perfection.

goddamn

Wasted years, but kept my soul

I always knew my home was rock 'n' rollin'

Days are short, before I go

I want my casket laced with guns and roses

I love the way this song flowed. The pre-chorus is my favourite within the song. He hits home with this one in my mind.

vampire diaries

Take, take, take me out

There's so much I haven't seen, don't let me rot inside this town

The music video to this song is amazing in my mind. I loved these lyrics especially the quoted line. It's such a vibe to me.

miss sunshine

These bad decisions I'm makin's just me avoiding boredom

I don't overly like this one. It's catchy don't get me wrong. It's just not my favourite.

sweet coraline

Can you count? Huh, fuck you, three, four

I watched an interview where he said this song is written about a fan. And in the interview, she asked him one question, and it was "How did you fumble Megan Fox?" and that's precisely why he didn't like her. Again, not one of my favourite songs.

indigo (Ft. phem)

There's some things I would rewind, but I don't havе the remote

Thеre's some things I manifested I wish I never wrote

THIS LINE. I love phem, so this feature was so worth it in my mind. You can feel the emotions in this song. His lyrics were spot on in my mind.

starman

Said she wanna see the real me, so I'm standing naked

Tryna understand who I am, so ovеrrated

We can get closе, touch lips, have conversation

This one is another favourite of mine from the album.

tell me whats up

I don't wanna go out, everybody sucks

My heart on this one. The intro has me completely.

cant stay here

No one can see the me that I hide, my misery hates company

The line "my misery hates company" rings so true for myself. I loved this song.

treading water

The beast killed the beauty; the last petal fell from the rose

And I loved you truly, that's why it's hard to let it go

I broke this home, but I'll change for our daughter, so she's not alone

The emotions I felt while listening to this song. I cried. It's honesty. It's raw emotions. This is the most truly real song on the album in my mind. He did such a good job on this track.

orpheus

Came up for air, my world's froze over

Strands of your hair still on my shoulder

And gravity's pull was never stronger

Than my soul's cord attached to you

I'm lost, but my heart's got the map to you

The whole reason I wrote this post, was because of this song. I love this one. I cried while listening to it. It's such a sweet melody and I love the lyrics of this one.

At the end of the day, mgk is proof that reinvention takes courage. He’s been doubted, criticized, and even written off more than once. Instead of backing down, he’s used every setback as fuel for a fire that has been burning inside his fans. His new album totally tugged at my heartstrings and I felt like it was worth sharing.

Thanks for reading.
