In a recent music Q&A interview, MELL, a dynamic gospel music artist and songwriter, shared insights into his work and faith. His passion for music is matched only by his dedication to sharing his personal encounters with God. With a unique sound that seamlessly blends heartfelt melodies, MELL’s music deeply resonates with listeners, offering an experience that is both spiritually uplifting and emotionally stirring.
What 1st drew you to music?
My love for music began at a young age, growing up in the church, where I was captivated by how music brought people into the very presence of God. It was more than just a passion—it was a way to experience the power and beauty of worship in a deeply spiritual way. Music became a tool for revival, a way to lead hearts into worship and connect souls to God.
Over the years, through dreams, revelations, and prophetic words spoken over my life by various ministers of God, I came to realize that this was more than just a talent—it was my calling. God has set me apart to be a music minister, a worshipper, to use music as a vessel for His glory. This is the purpose He has placed in me, and I am committed to walking in it, allowing every song and every note to be an offering of praise that draws others closer to Him.
Congratulations on your recently released songs: ‘Lord You Are’ and ‘In Your Name.
Thank you! I'm grateful for the support and feedback on 'In Your Name.’ and ‘Lord You Are.” They reflect my personal journey and encounters with the Holy Spirit.
‘Lord You Are’ is a deeply spiritual song. Can you share the story behind this track and how it came to be one of the highlights of your recent work?
‘Lord You Are’ was birthed from a place of deep personal reflection on how the Lord Jesus delivered me from the chains of addiction, the weight of abuse, and the struggles that gripped both my spirit and my body. There were times when darkness seemed overwhelming, but through it all, God’s hand was there, guiding me, lifting me out of the depths.
This song is my testimony—an acknowledgment of God’s unwavering presence in every aspect of my life. I was led to write it as a reminder that no matter the storms we face, no matter how hopeless things may seem, God is faithful beyond measure. His love never wavers, His mercy is unending, and He is always, always worthy of our praise. Through this song, I hope to offer a glimpse of the power and grace that transformed my life, praying it inspires others to see that the same God who rescued me is there for them too.
The lyrics of ‘Lord You Are’ convey a powerful message of worship and reverence. What was your inspiration for writing this song, and how do you hope it will impact those who listen to it?
The inspiration behind 'Lord You Are' was my desire to create a song that would inspire worship and bring people into a space of reverence for God. I hope it moves listeners to a deeper connection with God, helping them realize that He is always there, deserving of our trust and devotion.
‘In Your Name’ features a distinctive blend of gospel and modern elements. Can you talk about the creative decisions that shaped this track and how it represents your evolution as an artist?
'In Your Name' blends gospel with contemporary sounds because I wanted to create a track that resonated with different generations. I wanted to merge traditional worship with modern production elements, reflecting my growth as an artist and the evolution of gospel music.
The theme of ‘In Your Name’ revolves around faith and divine intervention. How do you incorporate personal experiences and beliefs into the songwriting process for this particular track?
The theme of 'In Your Name' comes from personal experiences of seeing God's intervention in my life. I write from a place of deep spiritual encounter and I aim to capture that trust in God's power and authority, believing that He’s can do exceedingly, abundantly above all we can ask or think accordingly to the power that works in us - (Ephesians 3:20).
Do you create music primarily for your own personal expression, or with your listeners in mind?
Music is an intimate expression of my heart and soul, but it goes beyond just my personal journey. Every note, every lyric is crafted with you, the listener, in mind. My deepest desire is for my music to resonate with you in a way that strengthens your faith and draws you closer to Jesus Christ. We all walk different paths, but the struggles, joys, and triumphs we experience are often shared.
Through my music, I aim to reflect those moments of life that unite us in Christ, offering melodies that echo the hope, grace, and love found in Him. My prayer is that when you listen, you not only hear my story but feel your own connection to God deepening, as we walk this journey of faith together.
In what ways do you think your unique sound differentiates you from other gospel artists, and what do you hope listeners take away from your music?
I think my sound stands out because it merges contemporary and traditional gospel elements, creating a bridge between different musical styles while staying true to the heart of worship. I hope my listeners find encouragement, hope, and a deeper relationship with God through my music.
Can you describe a particularly memorable moment when you saw your music make a meaningful impact on someone’s life?
One memorable moment was when someone shared how 'Lord You Are' helped them during a tough time in their life. Hearing that my music brought them peace and closer to God reaffirmed why I create.
Your songs reflect themes of hope and resilience. Can you discuss any challenges you’ve faced in your musical journey and how your faith has helped you overcome them?
My journey in music has had its challenges, especially trying to balance faith, family, and ministry. But my faith in Christ has always given me the strength to keep going, trusting and knowing that God is guiding my steps, no matter how tough the path seems-(Mathew 28:20)
Are there any specific gospel artists or musicians who have influenced your sound or inspired your musical journey?
Gospel artists like William McDowell, Theophilus Sunday, and Michael Bethany have profoundly shaped my music ministry. Their unwavering passion and spiritual ability to usher in the presence of God through worship have stirred something deep within me. Witnessing how they create an atmosphere where hearts are transformed and God’s glory is felt has been both humbling and inspiring.
It’s this same desire that fuels my music—to not just create songs, but to invite heaven to touch earth, where lives are changed and souls encounter the living God. Through their influence, I am committed to pursuing that same path, crafting music that draws people into a deeper relationship with Jesus and stirs their spirit to worship Him in truth and surrender.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why? What do you think such a collaboration would bring to your music?
If I could collaborate with any artist, it would be William McDowell. His music has an incredible depth of worship and carries a profound anointing that moves people into the presence of God. William McDowell's ability to create a space where heaven touches earth is something I deeply admire and aspire to in my own ministry.
A collaboration with him would not only elevate my music but would also be an opportunity to create a worship experience that transcends the ordinary, bringing people into a deeper encounter with God. His heart for worship aligns with mine, and together, I believe we could craft music that stirs souls and ignites a powerful move of the Spirit.
Do you currently perform live, or do you have plans to do so in the future? If so, how do you prepare for your live performances, and what do you find most rewarding about connecting with an audience in a live setting?
Yes, I currently perform live, and I plan to continue as much as possible. Live performance or ministration are where I feel the most connected to my audience. To prepare, I spend time in waiting on the Holy Spirit, as I continue to pray and rehearse with my team, and focus on delivering a message through music. The most rewarding part is seeing how tangible moments in God’s presence touches lives in real-time.
What is your favorite/best outlet to connect with your followers Instagram, Spotify, FB, Twitter, iTunes? How would you want them to follow?
Instagram, and Spotify are my favorite platform to connect with followers because of its visual nature and ability to engage directly with people. I also appreciate the reach of platforms like my email, Facebook Page, Spotify and iTunes, but Instagram is where I share behind-the-scenes moments and interact the most with my audience.
Are you currently working on any projects we should look out for?
I’m currently working on new songs and planning more live ministrations. There are a few songs such as “You Reign Forever”, “Break the Alter”, “Yahweh Is Your Name”, in the works that I’m excited to share soon. Stay tuned for updates!
Is there something you would like to say that I didn't cover?
I just want to thank everyone who has supported me on this journey. Every listen, share, and prayer means so much. My hope is to continue creating tangible moments in God’s presence.
