Mark Fenster Finds Freedom in Motion with “Heavenly Bliss”
Gabriola Island composer transforms a once-in-a-lifetime heli-skiing adventure into a soaring meditation on peace, joy, and nature’s beauty
Following the release of Serenity Sessions, Vol. 1, Gabriola Island-based composer, vocalist, and meditation leader Mark Fenster returns with his new single “Heavenly Bliss.” The piece unfolds as a flowing, neo-classical journey inspired by the awe and freedom of Fenster’s first heli-skiing experience in British Columbia. Both calming and invigorating, the track merges meditative textures with the expressive pull of cello, reflecting a sense of weightlessness and wonder that only the mountaintops can offer.
“After growing up on skis – having skied on snow, sand, grass, water, glaciers and even in the air – the one bucket list item which had to be fulfilled was heli-skiing,” Fenster explains. “Last spring, the experience was granted and it felt like, well, ‘Heavenly Bliss.’ The openness and freedom of the alpine winds… the glorious blue-bird, open sky… the comfortable temperature… It’s impossible to describe with words alone, but this song captures the feelings of freedom and joy perfectly.”
That sense of motion and emotional lift is mirrored in the collaboration with cellist Corbin Keep, whose playing adds an organic depth to the otherwise ethereal textures. Fenster and Keep’s musical connection goes back three decades to their early days in Vancouver’s music community. Now both residents of Gabriola Island, the reunion feels natural, as if time itself had orchestrated their return. “Corbin added a precious gift to this piece with his story-telling cello,” Fenster says. “I couldn’t be more grateful to play with my dear brother again.”
At its core, “Heavenly Bliss” is part of Fenster’s ongoing Serenity Sessions series, a body of work guided by his commitment to healing and mindful creation. Each composition is written to bring calm and reassurance, both to listeners and to the artist himself. “Every piece is designed to remind us that even in chaos, there’s still peace and love,” Fenster says. “Imagine a sign that says: ‘Spoiler Alert! Everything’s going to be ok.’ My music is designed to help Calm the Folk Down.”
That philosophy threads through all aspects of Fenster’s work. His compositions invite stillness without losing vitality, blending elements of classical, ambient, and cinematic sound. The music unfolds patiently, offering listeners a meditative space that balances emotional release with grounded serenity. “Heavenly Bliss” embodies that vision: a moment of joy remembered through sound, built on gratitude and the thrill of human experience.
Fenster’s journey to this point has been as dynamic as his music. Born in Montreal, Quebec, he was first discovered by producer Ben Kaye (Céline Dion, Michel Pagliaro), who recognized his versatility as a singer and songwriter. Over the years, Fenster has collaborated with members of April Wine, Luba, and Chilliwack, and spent nine seasons performing with the Vancouver Opera. His compositions have been featured in Jessie Award-winning theatre productions, as well as in film, television, and choral performances around the world.
In 2010, Fenster launched Cantoria: The Musical Project for Peace alongside his daughter Zoe. The project brings together diverse religious and spiritual traditions through a shared belief in love, compassion, and connection. It marked a turning point in his artistic path, linking music and meditation as tools for unity and healing.
With “Heavenly Bliss,” Fenster continues that mission. The track is both a personal reflection and a universal message, offering a reminder of what it means to feel alive — to stand in silence above the clouds, breathing in the vastness of the world. Through each note and texture, Fenster captures the essence of freedom that can’t be contained by words, only felt through sound.
At once intimate and expansive, “Heavenly Bliss” stands as a testament to Fenster’s lifelong devotion to the craft of creating music that heals, comforts, and uplifts. It’s a sonic snapshot of a moment that defies explanation, transformed into something timeless.
