Anti-Valentines Day Playlist

By Nicole HornPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Music is an amazing thing. It can help you deal with life by relating to the lyrics and provide an outlet for whatever you are going through. Music can actually change how you feel; uplift you, throw you down in the dumps, or even just give you something to cry about when you’re having a bad day.

Music entertains and gets us through life.

Single life is not something that very many people celebrate, mainstream will have you believing it’s just something you endure until you find “your other half.” Well I’ll say it! Being single is a lot more than just living to find a partner. It’s about finding yourself, pushing your boundaries, seeing what you are capable of on your own, and finding your own happiness that is NOT dependent on another person. That means no one can take it from you because it’s rooted in you and nowhere else.

I don’t believe you are some half person until you find someone to fill the void you feel. To me, a partner is someone who fits seamlessly into your being, as if they belonged there all along. But instead of being a missing piece, they are really just the frame to your puzzle. Sitting there peacefully, bringing your whole puzzle together and helping the best of you shine brightly.

Single anthems are great and help remind us that life is about much more than being a couple. I also really love to hear a great friend anthem or life anthem to make sure we know life is also about other non-romantic connections we need to make with each other as humans. We crave that connection to other humans (or animals) and that is what really gets us through.

I listen to a good mix of different music genres; I don’t stick to one all the time, although I gravitate towards country music, I listen to a bit of everything.

Single Anthems:

“Firework” by Katy Perry

This song has always been an inspiration for me in my life. It’s the perfect tune to hear when you’re feeling like you are worthless and can’t seem to get through to yourself. To me, it’s about being the best you can be on your own and once you accept that, you will be able to shine so bright other people will never be able to tell you any different.

“Good as Hell” by Lizzo

Lizzo is one artist who has a lot of songs celebrating much more than loving someone else. She is popular for writing and singing about self-love to the extreme and life in general. Good as Hell is a celebration of knowing your worth and not settling for less than you deserve. The lyrics are uplifting and remind you that being a woman can be so fabulous and beautiful.

“Raise Your Glass” by Pink

Pink is a 90’s staple, but this song is from 2010 and honors being on your own and acknowledging that you are worth celebrating. It also encourages supporting one another as well.

“Bluebird” Miranda Lambert

This one has a life-long lesson of just keep singing and taking life one thing at a time. It’s about taking the lemons of life and just mixing them in your drink and continuing on with your journey through life.

“Girl on Fire” Alicia Keys

This is probably one of my favorite songs ever because it’s about a woman who is so strong and she knows it. No one can touch her but she’s also still vulnerable, she just does not let it stop her from doing what she dreams and works for.

Friend Anthems:

“Good Time” by Niko Moon

“One Margarita” by Luke Bryan

“Southbound” Carrie Underwood

These three tracks are my go-to for summer time shenanigans and getting together with friends to have nothing but good times in the sunshine. They all celebrate the friendships and community connection cultivated in times when we all just need a little bit of fun and understanding.

Music is an amazing emotional outlet. Even if you can’t play a single note or can’t sing worth a damn; Blasting that one special song, or an entire playlist, is enough to make everything better.
