JVY King’s ‘Listen to Me’ EP Proves He’s Built Different

JVY King Makes a Statement with Soulful New EP 'Listen To Me'

When JVY King dropped his new EP Listen To Me on May 15, I immediately hit the "Save for Later" button on Apple Music. JVY King isn’t just another name on my 2025 Artists to Watch list—he’s the kind of artist that makes you pause, reflect, and truly listen. He’s not chasing trends or hiding behind flashy production. Instead, Listen To Me feels like an intentional body of work meant to introduce us to his rawest thoughts, wrapped in smooth vocals and soulful beats.

Let’s break down the project, track by track:

1) Afford You – 8/10 This was a strong opener. It doesn’t showcase the full strength of JVY’s vocals, but it sets a thoughtful tone. Conceptually, it’s refreshing—when was the last time an EP opened with a track that ends with the gut-punch line, "Sorry if I gotta leave to afford ya"? JVY’s pen game is evident here. It’s emotional and nuanced.

2) Antidote – 10/10 The lead single and clear standout. "Antidote" blends smooth melodies with introspective writing. Lines like "Communication if you’re hurting, I give you the world 'cause you deserve it" reveal not just vulnerability but devotion. This track has the kind of emotional weight and honesty that keeps listeners coming back.

3) Control It – 6/10 This one gave me Brent Faiyaz vibes, but it didn’t quite land after the emotional high of "Antidote." JVY King’s voice doesn’t need too many effects or filters—his tone, similar to Maxwell or Anthony Hamilton, does the heavy lifting naturally. A more stripped-down production might’ve served this better.

4) Couldn’t – 10/10 This record is pure heat. JVY’s aggressive tone is compelling and real. Lyrics like “Learned as a man to hide my emotions, try to disguise my expressions” and “Hurt myself trying to protect you” hit hard. The falsetto moments elevate the track, and the line "You chose yourself when I would always choose you" is both chilling and deeply revealing.

5) State of Mind – 8/10 More of a rap-forward effort, but still well-executed. The production stands out, adding texture and bounce. JVY flows effortlessly here, and the hook—"So if you wanna go"—lingers long after the song ends. It’s the kind of line that sticks in your head for days.

6) True To Me – 10/10 A perfect closer. This song showcases JVY King’s natural vocal ability and reinforces his identity as a soulful storyteller. It’s soothing and authentic, reminding us that JVY doesn’t need heavy production or auto-tune—his voice is the instrument.

Final Take: JVY King Is the Real Deal

JVY King is a multi-dimensional artist who clearly understands his strengths. He has the vocal range, the pen, and the ability to create concept-driven songs that resonate. Listen To Me is more than an EP—it’s a statement.

From the lyrical depth to the emotional vulnerability, JVY offers listeners something rare in today's music climate: authenticity. There’s no gimmick here—just a young artist using his voice, his stories, and his pain to carve out a lane entirely his own.

If you’ve been searching for an artist who sings with intention, writes with soul, and delivers without trying to be anyone else, JVY King might just be the one.

Component Grades:

Beats: 10/10 – Every beat supports JVY’s vocal strengths. No trend-chasing here.

Lyrics: 10/10 – His writing feels like life quotes—memorable and sincere.

Concepts: 10/10 – Each song fits into a bigger story.

Rollout: N/A – No major promo spotted, possibly a grassroots social drop.

Replay Value: 10/10 – You’ll want to run this EP back more than once.

Total Music Score: 8.67/10

Total Album Score: 9/10

I really enjoyed reading your breakdown of JVY King's "Listen To Me" EP. You've got some great insights. I'm curious, though. Do you think an artist should always aim for a consistent sound throughout an EP or album, or is it okay to have tracks that stand out in different ways like "Antidote" and "Couldn’t" did here? Also, how important do you think the opening track is in setting the overall mood for the rest of the project?
