Let's Talk About Purple Kiss Debut And Ponzona

Purple Kiss Debut Review

By ShinxPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Purple Kiss have finally made their long awaited debut, and what an interesting debut journey they had. So let’s just jump into it, but first let’s talk about their predebut tracks: “My Heart Skip A Beat”, and “Can We Talk Again”

My Heart Skip A Beat

I first learned about Purple Kiss through their performance video for” My Heart Skip A Beat.”

Instantly the song hooked me, with how vibrant and powerful it is, plus with how heavily rock based the song is. Rock being heard in kpop is quite rare, and the only kpop acts that have done the rock genre that I can think of is Day6 and Dreamcatcher, so it’s cool to see other kpop acts explore the rock genre.

I really love “My Heart Skip A Beat.” It's quite energetic, the chorus is catchy, and I really loved the rap portion. Then they also displayed their amazing dance skills in the music video, and they appear to have so much potential. From that point on, I had to keep my eye on Purple Kiss.

Can We Talk Again

They then released another pre debut single called “Can We Talk Again” and their vocals blew me away. They have a great vocal range, and I love that many of the members sing in a more deeper register. Usually female idols in kpop are pushed to sing in a higher voice, but in Purple Kiss they explore their deep voice and they sound quite confident and comfortable in their deeper voice.

“Can We Talk Again” is a gorgeous song, and further increased my interest in Purple Kiss. They showcased their vocals, rapping, and dancing skills so well in their pre debut singles, I got very excited for their debut.

Debut: Ponzona

Purple Kiss finally debuted, and their debut is quite interesting and unexpected. The title track is “Ponzona” which is more of a mid tempo song with elements of alternative pop heard in the west among artists like Billie Eilish and Melanie Martinez. It is quite surprising because often kpop title tracks, especially the debut track, is often energetic and explosive, but Purple Kiss went down a completely different route.

“Ponzona” is slow, yet seductive and secretive. It’s a type of song to listen to on a rainy day while reading a mystery novel. It also is a stagnant track, but this time the stagnant sound works. The song stays in one somber tone, and never leads up to an explosion, but continuously plays off this mysterious tone it created and it works so well. I love that it is a slow tempo song because in this song they do showcase all their talents, but not too much so that it leads listeners wanting more. I think “Ponzona” is an excellent debut because it gives you just enough to leave you satisfied, but still makes you curious and wanting a little more.

Into Violent Mini Album

Purple Kiss also released a mini album, and it is really good. It includes the title track, the two pre debut singles, and 3 more songs: “Skip Skip”, “Hello”, and “Period”. These three songs blend perfectly into the mini album, and I feel like every track shows off Purple Kiss talents well. My favorite songs on the mini album are probably “Skip Skip,” “Ponsona” and “My Heart Skip a Beat”.

I only have one complaint with the mini album, and that is the intro “Crown”. Crown should have been a full fledged song. I love the alternative pop sound, giving me major Billie Eilish vibes, and it would have been an amazing track. I feel like it was wasted and they could've done a lot with the instrumental and expanded on it. It’s just such a shame that it is only 30 seconds and doesn’t get to be a full song.

Purple Kiss Future

This debut was worth the wait, and I see so much potential in Purple Kiss. I now want to learn more about the girls, because they seem so interesting. I can also see Purple Kiss becoming a big powerhouse in kpop in a few years, and I just can’t wait to see how their career plays out.
