Lady Gaga's albums ranked

From Swines to Fame Monsters

By Chloe GilholyPublished 6 years ago 4 min read

Lady Gaga has always been an interesting character. Whether she's cosplaying as Kermit the Frog or wearing raw meat, her fashion always finds a way to stand out from the crowd. She reminds me of a lot of the older artists like David Bowie and Madonna, who continually reinvented themselves. I like a lot of Lady Gaga's music because it's unpredictable. Yes, I always expect that there's going to be some cheap electronic beats somewhere, but she always finds a way to surprise me. She's a pop star in her own right, but she's crossover a lot of genres, and even a lot of it is subtle. The more I listen to it, the more influences I can hear from other styles.

The rankings of these albums are all based on my personal opinion, and I will be including A Star is Born, even though it's a soundtrack album, Lady Gaga is very present in this. I will also Cheek to Cheek, the collab album she did with Tony Bennett. The Fame and The Fame Monster are considered two different albums.

8. Cheek to Cheek (2014)

Favourite track: It don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)

To be honest, I almost forgot that this album existed. Cheek to Cheek is a traditional tribute to the great American songbook all consisting of covers. I don't usually like cover albums, but I do have exceptions. Lady Gaga's voice fits fell with the jazz, and Tony Bennett sounds very comfortable. The album leaves little room to show off Lady Gaga's creativity, but it's easy to appreciate her vocal talents. That being said, I hope she makes another Jazz album in the future.

7. Joanne (2016)

Favourite track: Hey Girl

I didn't get this album at first. I didn't know why the album was called Joanne until I researched it. Joanne shares the name with one of Lady Gaga's aunts. I read up on another review that Million Reasons brought her vocals back on the front, but I think her vocals have always been there. In earlier albums, they here blended or drowned in electronica. I think the album does a good job crossing pop and country together. I think her duet with Florence Welch is fantastic. I do feel that this album as a whole is underrated.

6. A Star is Born (2018)

Favourite track: Shallow

All the good stuff about Joanne is amplified in Lady Gaga's parts in this soundtrack. I listened to the soundtrack before I watched the movie, and even with the songs alone, I felt that I knew the story. Her vocals shine, and she proved that she could make timeless music and not just disposable pop records.

5. Chromatica (2020)

Favourite track: Rain on Me

This one is more of her recent albums, and I think compared to the other records this one sits in the middle. I think this album has the best aesthetics. The album cover is fantastic, and I love the music videos. Her collabs with Ariana Grande and Elton John are awesome. It's got a really strong 90's vibe.

4. The Fame (2008)

Favourite track: Love Game

Lady Gaga's debut will always be a classic to me. When it first came out I used to listen to it all the time. This record always makes me think of summer. It was made at a time when I was getting a bit tired of mainstream pop music, but The Fame sounded like a breath of fresh air because there was more personality and the lyrics had great play on words. The only thing about this album is that I felt that it was incomplete, this was fixed with the reissue.

3. Artpop (2013)

Favourite track: Swine

This album caused a lot of controversies, but for me, this album is Lady Gaga to a T. I only wish that it was Christina Aguilera's version of Do What You Want With My Body on the record instead of R.Kelly because of what's come to light about him being a creep. I love the reference to Greek goddesses and embracing sexuality. I believe in Lady Gaga's music. I feel that she's reaching out to the LGBTQ+ community and wanting us to embrace our sexuality.

2. Born This Way (2011)

Favourite track: Bloody Mary

I remember when the title track, Born This Way made the media cause a storm with hints to Express Yourself by Madonna. I think out of all her albums, and I would say that this song has the most eclectic collection of songs with subtle tributes to many genres. This album is one of a kind, and I don't think there will ever be another album like it. It's got her signature sound and lyrics that only Lady Gaga could compose.

1. Fame Monster (2009)

Favourite track: Telephone

Earlier I said that I loved The Fame, but always felt it was incomplete. The Fame Monster fixed that. Bad Romance and Telephone were my jam a decade ago. At the time, there wasn't a single track that I didn't like. I had this album on loop all the time. Her duet with Beyonce will always be iconic for me.
