Jont Captures Late-Night Vulnerability on New Single “Let’s Just Be Friends”

Nova Scotia singer-songwriter explores love, honesty, and the fleeting beauty of human connection

From the quiet corners of a Nova Scotia night, Jont’s “Let’s Just Be Friends” emerges as a tender, nocturnal meditation on love and truth. The song drifts effortlessly between dreamy romanticism and grounded self-awareness, telling a story of connection that is as inevitable as it is ephemeral. Vulnerable and timeless, it captures the bittersweet beauty of understanding a relationship that may have been destined to burn bright and fade.

“Late at night, sat up in bed with my guitar, is how some of my best songs have come,” Jont shares. “Maybe it was always thus for songwriters – Cohen, Dylan – the muse sitting beside them as the world sleeps. And with my cats Oscar and Buttons beside me, I can be found there too, up late, lights low, guitar in my lap, writing something that’s sprung out of me without warning and demanding my attention.”

The genesis of “Let’s Just Be Friends” is rooted in this late-night intimacy, a space where reflection and emotion converge. The song is unmistakably autobiographical, balancing the frank honesty of its lyrics with a soft, reflective tone. “You don’t have to be a genius to work out it’s a love song,” Jont continues. “And an autobiographical one at that. Sincere too in its message – or maybe not sincere in the desire to stay as just friends. Just true in what it says about what happens when you don’t.”

“Let’s Just Be Friends” inhabits that liminal space between longing and surrender. In the chorus, Jont sings, “Right now the world is asleep, it’s just you and me counting sheep, we can’t afford to miss a beat, or no-one’ll know how many there have been…” The lyric captures the fleeting, dizzying joy of new connection, even as the verses quietly anticipate the impermanence of the bond. It is a meditation on the beauty of the moment while acknowledging that love’s trajectory is rarely linear.

“Sometimes it seems the songs know before I do how things are going to go,” Jont reflects. “But we haven’t learnt the lesson until we’ve had enough of the pain. And though over the years the pain might have seemed almost too much to bear, it has also led directly to more fruitful evenings — sat up late at night, guitar in lap, as emotions alchemise and dissolve into a subtle and radiant joy.” These words underline the reflective core of the song, revealing how vulnerability and lived experience inform Jont’s artistry.

Musically, “Let’s Just Be Friends” is defined by its emotional honesty and stripped-back instrumentation. The track’s delicate pacing allows Jont’s phrasing and introspection to breathe, each line a quiet reckoning with love’s impermanence. Its gentle arrangement highlights the warmth and subtlety of his vocals, drawing listeners into an intimate nocturnal space where emotion is given room to flourish without artifice.

Jont’s career has long defied convention. Born Jonathan Whittington in London, he began writing poetry at 14, touring the U.S. to meet and learn from legendary poets, and later carved a path as a singer-songwriter and solo performer. Over decades, his songs have appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, Parenthood, Without a Trace, and Wedding Crashers, while his innovative Unlit tours introduced a living-room-style performance culture, emphasizing connection and intimacy in live music.

Since relocating to Nova Scotia and discovering fatherhood, Jont’s music has entered its most reflective and profound phase. “Let’s Just Be Friends” exemplifies this new chapter, blending tender lyricism with emotional resonance. The song is both ambitious and grounded, balancing human vulnerability with a timeless perspective on love and connection.

As Jont continues to release music beyond 2025, “Let’s Just Be Friends” is a song for those who understand the fragility and beauty of human connection, and for anyone who has felt the simultaneous joy and melancholy of letting go.
