Jettison Humanity

She's Deadly

By Emily McGuffPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

Introduction:

The song below was written for a dear friend. When he was a kid, he would stare into the night sky through the lens of a telescope, imagining the possibilities. Through that thin, man-made cylinder of plastic, metal, and curved glass, he was able to glimpse other worlds. He talked nostalgically about how he was fascinated by the stars and all of the space that existed beyond our fingertips. This idea kept floating up, unable to be held down by the gravity of day-to-day troubles: that all of our problems and all of our stresses would mean nothing in the vacuum of space. Sometimes we are so bogged down by the weight of our issues on this hunk of rock, but in the deep blackness of space, they are hardly significant.

Here on our spinning globe, deadlines loom, hearts shatter, and our bodies bend with the burden of it all - our own version of gravity, dragging us to the depths of an inner darkness that competes with the inkiness of the sky beyond our atmosphere. But out there, the silence of space drowns it all. The worries fade, becoming dust among the stars. Our universe is so unfathomably vast - and our lives are simply a blink, a second, a moment. The same stars that brought wonder to a small child are a silent, glowing reminder that the universe is unfathomably vast and our mundane worries are fleeting.

This is a love letter to a boy who saw the world’s infinite nature spreading outward and felt in awe of it all. It is a tribute to the fact that although our daily lives may become difficult to manage, the universe continues to spread ever outward - full of wonder, glittering balls of light, and hope for something more - even if we never see that hope come to fruition.

Verse 1:

I’ve always been fascinated

By outer space

Telescopes and Stars alight

As we tried to see what we could see

The vacuum of it all

The stillness of the void

I think I could survive

Without all the noise

Chorus:

Fly high

Jettison your humanity

Up here without the light

Your words are insignificant

Float away

Let go your morality

Out here in the dark

Your eyes are just memories

Verse 2:

The taste of life is ash

Burnt up and blowing away

Hydrate enough and you’ll flower

But the blooms never came

But out here with the stars

Nothing can exist but their light

I think I could survive

If I just take flight

Chorus:

Fly high

Jettison your humanity

Up here without the light

Your words are insignificant

Float away

Let go your morality

Out here in the dark

Your eyes are just memories

Verse 3:

I try to connect the dots

Between the burning bits of rock

But the strength to hold them

Escapes my fingertips

Ties bind me to others

But we are only animals

I think I could survive

Without the manacles

Chorus:

Fly high

Jettison your humanity

Up here without the light

Your words are insignificant

Float away

Let go your morality

Out here in the dark

Your eyes are just memories
