I wasn’t an expert in small business, but I had skills like answering customer service emails, doing simple graphic design in Canva, and general admin work. I knew I could learn what I didn’t know. So, I took action fast. The very next day, I ordered business cards, set up a website, and attended a local networking event.

Overcoming Fear and Taking Action

I won’t lie—I was terrified. I had no formal business background and no clue how to start. But I had a powerful "why" behind me. My two kids were the driving force. I wasn’t just doing this for me; I was doing it for them, for the future I wanted to create for our family.

Even the things becomes more tough, like when getting rejected multiple times from clients and I was making mistakes, I reminded myself of my "why" and kept moving forward. That’s one of the first lessons I teach in my programs—know why you’re doing this. When times get hard, you need to keep yourself forward.

Building Connections

My first networking event, I listened to everyone who took the stage, rather than pitching my business. What I learned was that most business owners love to talk about themselves. I didn’t worry if I didn’t have a perfect pitch, instead I asked questions about their business and I made deep connections. Following the event, I emailed everyone I spoke to with just a simple thank you and the idea to connect someday.

Building relationships, not just selling, was key. Over time, those connections led to paid opportunities and referrals.

The Power of Online Networking

After my second baby I could never attend live networking events anymore and shifted my focus to online networking. So I searched Facebook groups with small business owners I could engage and add value without selling my services directly. I started answering questions, giving advice, and even started making short Loom vids, showing them how to solve problems.

I showed up as an expert, invoking trust and solid relationships by giving first. Eventually, more clients and more referrals came along.

Scaling to $10,000 a Month

One of the biggest secrets to scaling my virtual assistant business to $10,000 months was building a team. From the very beginning, I didn’t want to be the one doing all the work. I knew I could build my business up faster than what I could do myself, if I could get things done by other people.

Hiring subcontractors to handle some tasks like the social media graphics or data entry, allowed me to grow my business, get more clients and work on the other things myself. I worked smarter not harder, I maintained a flexible schedule so I could spend quality time with my kids.

Despite working from home, I never worked more than 15-20 hours a week, and it was all done on my terms. Building a team allowed me to grow my business without being tied to a desk.

The Freedom Life

I wasn’t just after the freedom of working from home, though that’s part of the equation—more than that, I wanted the flexibility to live my life on my own terms. Outsourcing tasks allowed me to spend time with my family, while building a profitable business. I’m passionate about helping others achieve this same kind of freedom.

So, what does your "freedom life" look like? Do you want to replace your income? Pay off debt? Take vacations? Whatever your goals are, creating a business that supports that lifestyle is possible.

Final Thoughts

There were no easy roads towards building my virtual assistant business but the key was always to keep going when things were tough. I did spend time, but I put the work in and it paid off. Today I am now able to help other achieve their dream of financial independence and freedom as a virtual assistant.
