I'm gonna spend my Christmas with a Dalek!

Sam's Christmas Playlist

By ᔕᗩᗰ ᕼᗩᖇTYPublished about a year ago 5 min read

I have certain songs that are MUST hear every year. Most aren't even in the vicinity of traditional Christmas songs. I like the ALTernative type songs. And not necessarily the traditional ones that always play like "Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas" one. Mine are way more eclectic. So without further adieu, sit back and enjoy my playlist:

"I'm gonna spend my Christmas with a Dalek" - The GoGo's (1964) The Go-Go's were a British group from Newcastle.[1] The group is known for their 1964 novelty Christmas single, "I'm Gonna Spend My Christmas with a Dalek". The single tried to turn the sinister Daleks into another version of the Alvin and the Chipmunks, with singer Sue Smith putting on a lisping childlike voice. Sadly, the single flopped but is still popular with Whovians (Doctor Who Fans) worldwide today.

"Christmas Tree Song" - Dustin (1996) A Christmas parody sung to the tune of "Lemon Tree" by the band, Fool's Garden.

"Yule Shoot Your Eye Out" - Fall Out Boy (2009) -- Fall Out Boy's song "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out" was originally featured on the 2003 compilation album A Santa Cause: It's a Punk Rock Christmas. The song's title is a play on words from the 1983 movie A Christmas Story, where a mother tells her son, “No, you'll shoot your eye out” when he asks for a BB gun for Christmas. In the song's title, “Yule” replaces “You'll” as a reference to Christmas. I think it's very clever and I like the beat!

"Shake Up Christmas" - Train (2010)

"Fairytale Of New York" - The Pogues (1988) - Here's one song me and my brother Mark agree on. We found that we both had it on our playlist. The song was released as a single in 1987 and became an immediate hit in Ireland. It features Kirsty MacColl on vocals. The song tells the story of Irish immigrants in New York City, their dreams of a new life, and their memories of home. The song has become a Christmas classic and was the third best-selling Christmas song between 2000 and the end of the decade. After MacGowan's death, the song's popularity increased, with sales rising 170% in the week after his passing.

"Santa's Coming For Us" - Sia (2017) -- The song was released on October 30, 2017, along with the album's pre-order. The music video for "Santa's Coming for Us" was released on November 22, 2017. It stars Kristen Bell, Dax Shepard, Henry Winkler, Susan Lucci, and Wyatt Oleff. The video shows Bell and Shepard trimming a tree and hosting a Christmas party. "Santa's Coming for Us" reached number 9 on Billboard's Holiday Digital Song Sales chart, number 2 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and 56 on the Holiday Top 100.

"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" - Mercy Me (2005) -- According to the band leader, MercyMe enjoyed altering older Christmas songs for compilation albums and decided to record their own Christmas album. The band incorporated more rock and other genres into The Christmas Sessions, which Millard described as "the most 'rock' album we've done". "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is an English traditional Christmas carol that dates back to the 1500s or earlier. It's also known as "Tidings of Comfort and Joy".

"Smile at Snow" - dodie (2016) Dorothy Miranda Clark (born 11 April 1995), known as Dodie but stylized as dodie, is an English singer, songwriter, author and YouTuber. Dodie began her career uploading original songs and covers to YouTube. As of August 2023, her main channel has over 196 videos, over 2.01 million subscribers and over 431.66 million views, and her second channel has over 203 videos, over 882k subscribers and over 100.46 million views. I love her singing, it's....unique.

"Merry Christmas Everybody" - Slade (1980) Released at the peak of the band's popularity, "Merry Xmas Everybody" sold over a million copies upon its first release. It is Slade's last number-one single and by far their best-selling single. It has been re-released for Christmas every decade since 1973 and has been covered by numerous artists. The single was certified double platinum by British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in December 2021.

"Christmas Lullaby" - Heather Lundstedt (2007) Lundstedt has performed professionally all over the world. Whether it be singing for Disney or belting out Opera's greatest hits, Heather has turned her passion for music into a flourishing and diverse career. Heather has performed in regional theaters all throughout Southern California. This particular song made early on in her career is my favorite.

"Christmas Tree" - Lady GaGa (2008) There used to be a crazy video someone made for this. It was hilarious and raunchy. Sadly it's disappeared from YouTube.

"Christmas in Killarney" - The Irish Rovers (2010) he Irish Rovers are a Celtic folk and pop group that was founded in Toronto around 1964 by five Irish-born musicians. This particular song was written in 1950 and has been performed by many artists.

"Christmas Canon" -- Trans-Siberian Orchestra (set to the tune of Pachelbel's Canon in D) (1998)

"Christmas Lullaby" - Shane McGowan (2008) -- “Christmas Lullaby” is a song by The Popes, a band that Shane MacGowan was a member of. Some say the song is profound, especially because it includes a line about Christmas in Palestine. Shane was particularly fond of it.

"Hallelujah" - Lindsay Stirling (2015) Lindsey Stirling is an American violinist, songwriter and dancer. She presents choreographed violin performances, in live and music videos found on her official YouTube channel, which she created in 2007. Stirling performs a variety of music styles, from classical to pop and rock to electronic dance music.

"Mary, Did You Know?" - Pentatonix (2014) -- The location was Bronson Cave in Griffith Park which was used in the original BATMAN TV series in the 1960's. The candles held by the singers and one HMI light outside the cave were the only illumination used during the 6-hour shoot.

"White Christmas" Cover - London Grammar (2017) -- London Grammar are an English indie pop band formed in Nottingham in 2009.

"Oi To The World" - No Doubt (2010) -- Oi to the World by No Doubt was written by Joe Escalante and was first released by The Vandals in 1996. No Doubt re-released it on their own album years later.

"Wonderful Christmas Time" - Paul McCartney (1980) -- This was released as a single in November 1979 and was McCartney's first solo single in almost nine years.

"Father Christmas" - Man Overboard (2013) -- Man Overboard covered “Father Christmas” originally by The Kinks for the compilation album Punk Goes Christmas.

"Carol Of The Bells" - Ashnikko (2021) -- I can't say enough good things about Ashnikko. I absolutely love her!

"Have Yourself a Merry little Christmas" - Billie Eilish (2023) This was performed live on Saturday Night Live!
