Ke Kai O Kahiki - Moku O Keawe

Aina, I ka nani me ka maluhia

in translation Answer my call island of Keawe, Land of beauty and serenity.

Keawe was an ancient Hawaiian chief who ruled the island in the 17th century. During His reign, the island was full of abundance and peace so His name became the inspiration for calling the island "Keawe"

The phrase E Moku o Keawe is used in the famous song "He Aloha Moku O Keawe " The chant represents Hawaiian poetry and it includes many names of places, winds and rains.

Kamaka Kūkona

He mele kaapuni no Keawe i ka lai

Kaʻapuni hoʻi i na ale o ke kai

Kaʻū aku kuʻu maka i ka uahi

Halii noho paʻa i ka ʻili kai

Helelei ē ka ua i ka moana

Aia i ke anu o Waimea

Maeele i ka ua Kīpuʻupuʻu

Puehu ʻae na ihe a ka makani

I Mahiki ē ka loa o ka nahele

He lei ke aloha ē

Kiekie Kaʻū kua makani

He umauma pa iʻa ē ke Aʻe Loa

He loa ka ʻikena mai Hāʻao

Au aku i ka nalu o Palahemo

He ʻiliʻili hānau a he ihi ʻula la ē

Eō ē ka wehi no kuʻu ʻāina

Hānau i ka ua Kanilehua

No Hilo Palikū a i Hilo One

He aloha nou ē Hilo Hanakahi

E ala ē, ē ala mai hoʻi ē

A mele for the land of Keawe in the calm

Circumferenced by the billows of the sea

My eyes gaze towards the smoky ash hued sky

Like a blanket covering the ocean’s surface

Then the rains fall upon the ocean to cease it

There in the cold of Waimea

Chilly by the Kīpuʻupuʻu rain

The wind blusters like piercing spears

At Mahiki lays the expanse of the forest

A lei of love indeed

Majestic is Kaʻū with its back against the wind

With its chest grazed by the Aʻe Loa wind

Vast is the sight from Hāʻao

To the waves of Palahemo

Born are the pebbles, a sacred offspring

Respond, song of praise for my land

Born in the Kanilehua rain

From Hilo Palikū to Hilo One

And love to you oh Hilo Hanakahi

Arise, arise

Chants and songs in the Hawaiian tradition of storytelling are to celebrate people, events, festivals and even traveling.

Movements of the hula dance are taken from the waves of the beach this is what the early dancers of hula are providing as their first inspiration for it.

According to Wikipedia Hula is a Hawaiian dance expressing chants (oli)or a song (mele).

Hula represents oli and mele in a visual dance form.

Movements of hands amplify nature-like gestures for example swaying trees in the breeze, and waves in the ocean, emotions, and feelings of fondness or yearning. Hip and foot movements portray steps like kaholo, ka'o or ami

Ancient hula kahiku is attended by traditional instruments and a chant whereas an evolved version of hula is called' auana' which means to drift or to wander. Auana evolved under the Western influence of 19,20th Centuries and it's accompanied by instruments like guitar, ukelele and double bass.

Some of the dancers admit that the training for hula is sometimes as hard as if they are going to die but the dance alone is gentle and full of love and healing and It helps and prepares them for Life to be better humans, better husbands, and better father for their children. As life is hard enough They need to be ready to go through it nourishing their masculinity and take care of the family with Love.

As I am not able to create such a beautiful and moving chant and song as Hawaiians people I haven't been there yet I will just try to create a poem in the moment of the now thinking about Hawaiians:

Oh dancing wind and places I haven't been in yet

Your call was so strong that I packed myself

the flowers were singing me lullabies so I could sleep

and have a good night

in the morning early phase

I tried some clothes and closed my suitcase

I had Moku O Keawe in my head singing to me

until I will forget myself

with the rhythm of the sound and the voice that is one-of-a-kind

I started to dive in steps and gestures of hands

waving like an ocean waves

taking me much further

then I realize I can dance

myself to another land

Hawaiian Sun,

warm sand and beautiful people

dancing and singing around

working hard

to make this place

a better Land!
